But does it come in red?

Nogo, is the object meant to be both functional and decorative?

Two guesses before bed -

1) A heating element

2) UK English a (thermionic) Valve / US English a Tube.

It probably has a heating element in it, but it is not one.
2) UK English a (thermionic) Valve / US English a Tube.

It is both a valve and a type of tube.

Chris, I doubt most of the guys and ladies on here are technical enough to know the different types of tubes so I guess your answer is close enough.

But there's whole family, from rectifiers to heptode pentodes !

But, ok.

It'll be a few hours.

You are welcome to keep guessing if you want to. I will say it is a tube that is still being manufactured today and is even being used in equipment currently manufactured.

Just for interest, it looks a bit like a klystron

It is a more all purpose tube than a klystron. This particular one was pulled from an HF radio so it operates at a lower frequency. It is a small tube and not a final RF output that would be a more common use for a klystron.

The common usage for this tube nowadays is audio so it is likely that is what it was used for back then as well.
