Would a doctor recommend this to correct a deficiency of a nutrient?

This item would not be used in a recipe. It is flavored with an ingredient that is commonly used for dessert recipes, but this item would not be a good source of obtaining that ingredient due to the other ingredients in this item.

Yes. Milk is part of the flavoring.

Is this a vitamin or mineral supplement? Perhaps intended for babies or people who can't swallow pills?

If you added peanuts to this would it be more edible? Or would you just use this to add to taste?

Yes it is a supplement. I doubt it would be given to babies but it may be appropriate for some people who are unable to swallow.

The average user probably chooses this form of supplent over a pill simply for taste and convienence.

A milk/protein supplement.
Are we looking for other additives like whey /vanilla?

The milk is part of the flavoring. It is not protein supplement or one designed to replace milk. Unless they are trace elements, there is no whey or vanilla in this item.

Sounds like a "Health food" shop/store item rather than a regular supermarket or pharmacy/drugstore? (Names for the outlet types vary internationally)
