A dental/jaw mold, used during the manufacture of artificial, replacement dentistry parts. At one time it would have been a form of "plaster" now some have a sythetic material in the mix.

The colour really put me off. Our dental moulds ar brilliant white!

The colors don't narrow it down enough for me. Many schools and colleges feature blue and gold.

Is this design associated with a specifically British institution (of any kind: educational, political, religious, charitable, . . . )?

That was half a clue? I didn't take it as such. You'd use the British spelling even if the embroidered patch originated on Alpha Centauri.
