Hi guys, sorry to bother you again.

So, I was wondering, I have a 40D with a 50mm 1.8 (and some other stuff) right now, and plan to buy a 5D3 and a 70-200mm 2.8 II in Summer.

I was wondering...
I have a Min. focusing distance of 0.45 meters on my 50 1.8.
The Min. Foc. Dist. of the 70-200 is 1.2 Meters.

Is there a way to calculate the frame that I can achieve with the 70-200 on a FF body, compared to the frame of the 50 1.8 on a 1.6x Crop body?!

Mainly the question is will I be able to get (with the zoom) close enough to the subject to produce aprox. the same image?!

50mm on APS-C is like 80mm on FF. If you put 50mm on 40D and 70-200 zoomed to 80mm on 5D3, at the same distance you get the same framing.

Your 50mm gets to 45/120 the distance, so your 50mm framing is 35% of the minimum framing at 80mm (and since the camera position is different the perspective -- relationship of subject to its surroundings -- will be very different) Of course, you can zoom to longer FL and shoot from 1.2m.

  • The 50mm on 40D at 0.45m sees 12x18cm within the frame area.
  • The 80mm on 5D3 at 1.2m sees 33x50cm within the frame area.
  • 200mm on 5D3 at 1.2m sees 12x18cm.

Wow, thanks!

If I read it well, then the 70-200 on a FF at 200mm, and Min.Focusing Dist. would give me the same frame, as the 50mm on a Crop at Min. Foc. Dist.
So basicly I could shoot the same scene with the two.

But how dramatically would the perspective change?!

See for yourself. Use your 50 at 0.45 m and 1.2 m. That's how much.

Yepp, and for that I lack a FF body, and a 70-200 (yet).
So I am just curious.

Your question was about how much the perspective would change. The only thing that affects that is subject distance, so you can do the experiment with the 40D and 50/1.8 that you have now.

Perspective is affected purely by the distances between the camera (or your eyes) and the various elements of the scene in front of you.

Please read our "sticky" (now in the General Photography Talk forum) tutorial titled Perspective Control in Images - Focal Length or Distance?.
