Anybody who owns this softbox able to tell me the length of it when folded??

I want to order one when I am in NY, but need it to fit in my luggage when I return to Peru.

I appreciate everyones time and help in advance, thank you.

Do these specifications help any?

It says the packaged length is 57". I'd guess there may be an inch or two extra for packaging, but I don't know that it would be much more than that. Interested to see if it's much different.

Thank you for that!............I think if it is over 50 inches, it will not fit in a luggage.....atleast my luggage.

I wonder if I can carry it on in my arms??

That would be quite tricky! Carry on luggage does have size limitations, but each airport (both TSA and airline companies) handles it differently. I don't know that I would plan on doing so - in the event that they tell you that you can't carry it on... then what would you do?

I obviously don't have any idea how much luggage that you have, but it may be worth it to just check it in the box that it comes in...

I will check with the airline............if I can check it in for free, I will definitely do that!

I only have 1 bag, as a 2nd bag has a $70 fee..........if I would have to pay $70 for the Wescott box, I probably will just forget about it.

I don't own the Westcott Apollo Mega BUT I do own an almost identical clone (120cm x 120cm). The internal frame looks identical the the genuine Apollo. My clone measures 49" end-to-end.

I just measured it. It's 49". Box is 50" x 5.25" x 5.25". Airline is likely not to be happy, and if you manage to convince them to even let you try it will all depend on whether it will fit in overhead bin, which I doubt it will.

Have you considered Photek Softlighter II? Unless I have mixed up my boxes size for their 60" when folded is 39" x 3.5" x 3.5", that is easily fitable into overhead bin and has much higher likelihood of getting onboard.

I think the Apollo will fit in the overhead bin, even at 50"... you would just set it in there with the length of the plane. Assuming they do let you bring it on, the issue is going to be that you may very well end up having someone else's luggage smashed up against it... since you would be infringing upon "their space".

Thinking out of the box:
Could you:

  • Go to NYC.
  • Buy the Apollo in a store.
  • Wrap it up yourself.
  • Post it to yourself back in Lima?
No excess baggage charges, you'd have control over the method of transportation, no wrangling with airline check-in/TSA/Peruvian Customs/other passengers onboard.

Just a random thought, looking for a possible answer for you. Might not be feasible but surely at least worth a look?

Phil ǁ Kershaw Soho Reflex: 4¼" Ross Xpres, 6½" Aldis, Super XX/ABC Pyro in 24 DDS, HP3/Meritol Metol in RFH, Johnson 'Scales' brand flash powder. Kodak Duo Six-20/Verichrome Pan. Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

Thanks every one for the input.

It is 49'' long without the box, too long for luggages.

I will contact my airline about either checking the box in (as long as there is no fee........I know you can check in Ski's/Baby carriages for free).........if I have to pay $70 for it as a 2nd bag, than I forget about it.

I would like to ship, and even B&H ships to Peru! But it has 2 issues, one it is very expensive to mail, and also the mail service down here is not too realiable, things do not always make it to there destinations unfortunately.
