Ok, I finally went and bought the Powershot pro1.. I took some random shots, about 150 just today to test it)

I installed the Canon CD that was with the kit, to upload my photos unto my computer

But when I connect my Pro1 via the USB cable to the computer, and try to upload photos, the program says that it cannon't find my camera.. But I am sure that it is connected right..

So, what can I do??

Thanks.

I just got my pro 1 this past Friday and figured something like this would happen to me but I got lucky I guess.
Did you do the instructions on the fold out sheet?
You can't connect the camera until after the restart. I had accidentaly taken out the disk before the restart and figured I had screwed up but when I plugged the camera in the new hardware found icon came on and it found it just fine.
You might try uninstalling and reinstalling it again.

Shawn , congratulations on your new Pro1

regards the problem you mention , I think the very best option ( for me anyway and has been always) is to purchase a card reader , connect it to the hub
or where ever is suitable for you
then stick the memory card into it when you have taken it (the card )out of the camera .
you can leave the card reader connected to the computer all the time and just slip in the memory card into the reader whenever you have photographs waiting to be downloaded from it

that way the camera never is connected to the computer
so there's never any worries should everything blow up

it'll only be the reader
and the card
(and the computer )

but never the camera

Best of Luck

you'll still always have the option of connecting the camera to the computer , when you find out what did not happen :)
so no worries

When trying to attach to the computer, do you have camera in Review mode?

For what it's worth, my G6/USB cable worked on my Mac (G4, OSX.3, iPhoto) right out of the box (I later installed the software, but I don't think i've ever even used it). I know very little about Windows, but several times in a pinch, i've connected to various Windows PCs and the Camera Assistant (or whatever it's called) has always seen the camera right away without installing anything, and talked me through downloading and burning to CD.

Yeah I figured out that I might buy the card reader, just because I will be less trouble to plug the card in the reader than plugging the cam into the computer..

Might be my cam or my computer but if the card reader works then I don't care..

thanks for the help

I have heard the card readers are faster at downloading the pics.
I do not have one just use the USB plug but I can tell you its slow as anything dowloading the pics.
I would love to know if they are much faster?

Hi Sonya,

:)
I agreed with what you said to do (above earlier post)
as well as mentioning the card reader
I forgot to say that

I would say go for the card reader

it's so fast the pictures fly up on the screen in a matter of seconds

you'll find it hard to run after them

welcome to the forum

Hi, ShawnBC
As you are new to the Pro1 and to the forum, summarizing the previous posts from an ‘older user’ point of view may help.

SonyaL hit the point. It is not difficult to install the software, but that little detail is important.

A card reader is a very good accessory and if it is USB 2.0 compliant is about ten times faster than the camera USB 1.1 port.

I have the Canon ZoomBrowser installed and it reads from the camera or the card reader and neatly organizes pictures. If you are planning to shot in RAW, Raw Image Task installed with Canon ZoomBrowser is a must even if you have other RAW processing software.

Bryan Bedell is right, both Mac and PC computers running WindowsXP have default drivers and handle the basic file transfer without Canon software installed.

When you connect the Pro1 to the USB port, it doesn’t matter if it is on or off, it automatically switches itself on in PC mode, ready fore file transfer or remote control operations.

Hope this helps.

I have that also installed also.
I imagine everyone getting a Canon camera has it installed

as the zoombrowser starts to load up I stop it as I don't need it
but it is there if I want it and I will sometimes. we always have that choice

my ' photoloader' takes the reading from the card as does Zoombrowser

photoloader 'asks' me if I want to go ahead.
but Zoombrowser darts on without asking

I click yes to photoloader and cancel zoombrowser on the spot
making sure I have both choices first in case I should need one or the other
should there be any kind of hitch with one

I use software named 'photoloader'
it's terrific and much handier (for me) to use then canon zoombrowser

I find it much easier in everyway for many reasons, immediately and
later when needing the pictures again (then Zoombrowser )

I find the whole system better (photoloader) and have done for over five years now

as you mentioned Raw that is an option with zoombrowser
having a Canon camera, I understand that usually the first thing we do is install the software which comes with it
I have.
I presumed Shane and Sonia have also
but always good for them to know, in case they have not

Thats great that the card readers are faster now I know I need one LOL.

I use the zoom browser to upload the pics its just its so darn slow I hate it.

Then I use Paint Shop Pro 8.10 to edit my pics I am wanting to get the new PSP X but since we just bought the camera I think we will wait on that one.

Besides theres more camera stuff we need.
We are trying to decide about lenses for more close up stuff and maybe some filters.

You probably know this, but just to be sure: the new card reader would still use zoombrowser (or whatever software you choose), it's just a faster connection to it.

Same sink, more water pressure.

If you have a Mac, be sure it supports USB2. Most macs have USB, but only newer ones (I think all G5s) have USB2. If you don't, you'll want a firewire card reader. If you don't have USB2 OR Firewire (for instance, an early G3 imac), don't bother, a regular USB cardreader isn't any faster than the camera.

Eh, I have a G4 eMac with USB1 and I use the card reader that's a part of my HP all-in-one printer. It's still faster than actually hooking up the camera IMO.
