Personally the colour image looks great as it is but if you are going for the selective colour image I like it better this way.

I would be tempted just to colour the pink trainers, although personal preference plays a big part...

Photoshop CS, I desaturate the layer then use the history brush to bring back the colour, I also used the burn tool to darken some areas.

I preferred the original (in color), but thought maybe the colors could be enhanced a bit. See what you think of something like this:

Rotated/Cropped, then adjusted lighting and colors with two layers. One layer was a duplicate of the original in overlay mode with about 8 pixel radius blur. The other was actually from nik Efex Pro "Sunshine" ... mostly I used it to increase the saturation and adjust the hue a bit.

A few thoughts, please take them as constructive help.

There's at least a dozen ways to do selective color in photoshop, google "photoshop selective color", or look at the FAQs here.

The picture could be better composed, and it looks out of focus or at least quite soft. To improve it try single centre point focus, and pay more attention to the background. Standing further away and using a longer lens gets less background in, plus blurs it out more. Also be careful if there's anything in your background try and be parallel to it so it's straight. Also when taking photos of children try getting down to their level, or lie on the ground.

Selective color's much overused. The face should be the focus of the picture, making it B&W is counterintuitive IMHO. If anything i'd use the channel mixer to make a B&W picture, perhaps 60% red channel, 20% each from green and blue, that's a starting point anyway.

I love the original color in the first photo. I'm not much of a fan of selective coloring unless there is a very soft hint of color on a vintage-type of looking photo.

Here is a de-saturated version... I had a hard time re-sizing it so I'm not sure how it will post.... I adjusted the levels a bit, added a little contrast and de-saturated.....
