This was a tough year for blossom watching. The buds were supposed to bloom and hit peak by the end of March, then it became April 2-7, then finally yesterday all blossom hell broke loose. Peak will last a day or two and then the green leaves will start to show.

I went down to the Tidal Basin early this AM to capture the blossoms. By 6:15 there were about nine thousand photographers with tripods fighting for a perch. Here are two of mine. I particularly like the tree with legs.

Is tomorrow too late for me to be there? We were thinking of it. I love the first one!

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."

I just couldn't make it down to DC today, but I did have a little time to kill in Baltimore. This is a photo I took about 6 hours ago, of Baltimore's Washington Monument (which pre-dates the one in DC, and which is mentioned in chapter XXXV of "Moby Dick"). The cherry blossoms serve as a nice framing element, and provide fine color contrast to the blue of the sky.

I also used my camera's built-in flash, which actually came in handy for providing fill light, for all that some purists insist built-in flash is useless.

The cherry blossoms in DC are undeniably iconic, but it's not like Washington's the only place where one can find an attractive cherry blossom scene.

We were in the DC area last weekend for other reasons. Heard the blossoms were to be at peak so went down to the basin to see them and there were very few blossoms! Very disappointed to say the least. The place was packed.
