I used to have one and it was a great lens. Performed just as well (if not better) than the 24-70s I've owned. Only reason I got rid of it was because I really like the 24mm end of things. 28 was never wide enough for me.

Ya i really like it. I traded 2 lenses in to get it at a local camera store and i think it suits my needs more than the others did. I would like to get a 24-70 for sure, they are just too pricy!

I'm not a pro but my 24-70 stays on my camera like 95% of the time. It's great in low-light.

28-70 is a great lens... (it is actually SHARER then the 24-70.)
But there is one big downside of it...

It gets hazy with time, and is not repairable. (No more parts exist) :(
That was the end of my 28-70 too.

But really a great lens, I loved it.

Canon may not be repairing this lens any longer, but there are many third-party repair shops that still do service this lens. I had one sent in for a CLA and zoom ring not too long ago. Still way sharper than any of the copies of the 24-70L that I've owned.

Yep, for anything else, it is repairable, but not for the hazy element. Or at least I could not find any shop repairing it, as none could get such a lens element.

(It is actually two peices of glass glued together, and between the two glasses it becomes hazy. So you need to change it alltoghether.)

But other than that, I woudl reather buy 2 pieces of 28-70 (one for use, and one as spare parts), then a 24-70.

Yes, the fact that it is no longer serviceable is an issue I overlooked when I got it. I am sure there are places around the Toronto area that can fix it.... I hope!!! Hopefully it will never get to that. I do take really good care of my equipment but time is a ****!!!! LOL

Ya that lens is great for sure, I had the opportunity to try it and that is what made me like that range. However the price was the stopper... I then found the 28-70 which was slightly cheaper and went for it instead. I am happy with my decision for now....

Fantastic lens, one of the best I ever had. I sold it to get the 24-70 II. The 28-70 is a ton sharper than the 24-70 I had before it.

If you don't mind driving out west a bit, there's a place in Burlington called Nortown Photo that does tremendous work. I have had nothing but great success every time I have brought something in for servicing.

The 28-70 2.8L was the 1st "L" lens I bought for my A2/A2E film bodies back in the day. I loved it so much I still have it and it's absolutely my go-to walking around lens. It's been lotsa places w/me & I hope yours will be widely travelled as well. Good Luck!
