It just didn't make me go "Wow!". I did like the AF and high ISO performance and that was it. I even tried out a loaner 1D X from CPS and that didn't impress me either. :/ If Canon releases a high MP body this year, will they have a reengineered sensor to compete with the D800? My gut feeling tells me "no".

It majors on things I don't want and struggles with those I do. And that's exactly why Canon needs to continue to offer a high end alternative, whether they want to or not. The 1Ds series did exactly that very successfully. Richard

The 1Ds series did exactly that very successfully. But Nikons are not without issues either. They seem to lack a design, almost as if they just "happened" to end up the shape they are. The cheap and nasty red plastic tick puts me right off. But I do like they way they have buttons to press rather than Canons multi-layer menus to penetrate (or not in my case - I just cannot comprehend them at all!). The interesting thing about the 5D3 and the D800 is that while they're often pitted against one another, they're clearly designed to excel in different areas and are not exactly direct competitors (other than price point and being FF). The D800 was designed to be a dynamic range monster....idea for landscape and studio shooters. AF and low-light performance don't matter a whole lot when you're shooting static subjects with a tripod. The 5D3 is designed to excel in low light performance, AF, and speed.....ideal for event, portrait, sports, and wildlife shooters. DR doesn't matter a whole lot when you have limited flexibility with shutter speed when shooting people, and you're pushing the ISO to compensate for low light. focalpointsphoto.com

But I do like they way they have buttons to press rather than Canons multi-layer menus to penetrate (or not in my case - I just cannot comprehend them at all!). I've grown accustomed to the Nikon layout and ergonomics and did not find any inconveniences that interrupted my shooting. I can still pick up a Canon and figure out the menu system without reading the manual. I just picked up Nikon D4 this week and it's a superb camera in every way. It will be used as my high ISO performer for the work I do. I had a difficult time choosing between that and a 1D X. The D4 was my choice in the end due to sensor performance. Sensor performance is a top priority for me. Why pay for something that doesn't perform to your expectations?

I like my 5d3 much more than my 1ds mark III. I can shoot in the dark with the 5d3 and with the other I'd start cringing after ISO 800. also the files take half as much sharpening.I'm glad that you're happy with the 5D3. It certainly is a great cam and ISO performer.

Also the ISO maximum of 6400 is a good 10x more than I'll ever use. Mystik610 (#22) knows my needs, its a shame Canon don't appear to pay as much attention. Richard
