FYI, we do have redpolls here, but they don't range as far south as the OP's location. And they have a very distinctive red cap with a black bib so are usually pretty easy to distinguish from house finches. -Liz

There's a winter finch forecast that comes out each year which predicts where they will show up (not just redpolls, but also other winter finches): http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/ff2012 -Liz
