Has anyone heard anything about Canon coming out with a 100-400mm L II?

This lens is getting "long in the tooth". I am thinking about getting one, but would wait if I knew something was coming.

A new one has been "in the works" for years.

Canon Rumors has had another rumor hit on the new lens possibly to be announced with the the 7D Mark II.

Designing, and building a proper lens, takes time, and needs to be tested...

I hope there is a new one coming, as I hope for a 24-70 2.8 IS also.

I doubt that as Canon recently released a mkii version of this lens and an f4 IS version.

True.

Undoubtedly there will be a 100-400 Mark II... just no one knows when. One sure thing, it will cost more.

Canon has been farting around with the 200-400/4L 1.4X IS for a couple years now, after announcing it was in the works. I don't think they'll be too quick to make advance announcements any more, after that.

Don't hold your breath for a 24-70/2.8L with IS (which isn't really needed very much on that lens anyway). Canon just intro'd the Mark II without IS and they ain't about to mess with the image quality of their least compromising, ultra premium standard zoom by sticking in additional, moving optics to serve for IS. Besides, the price tag with IS would be about 25% higher than the lens without IS, which has already seen a substantial price increase compared to the Mark I version.

Just for you they've intro'd the 24-70/4L IS.

Or there's the Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC, which is getting pretty good reviews.

There is a 200-400 in the pipeline thats probably the successor the 100-400. Its supposed to be F4 and have the built in extender. Also doesnt have the dreaded dust pump push pull zoom.

And a "five" figure price tag to go with it

I've heard that the new 100-400 will NOT be a push-pull zoom, but not sure how true that can be. Would be a nice change though, less dust in the darn thing...

That's the rumour everybody seems to be discussing Ken, screw zoom. Hopefully the pricepoint won't follow the same trend as what has been happening, because if it does it is going to be expansive when it does hit the market.

this original post could've been made 4 years ago...same speculation...just buy the lens...if you are worried about losing money, buy used...even if the new one is released the price will be a lot higher, and you won't be out much money if any if you choose to sell it and get the newer version

These lenses are totally different, other than being 400mm at the long end they have nothing in common.

The f/4 is not a "replacement" for the very affordable and portable f/5.6

Ken., have you used the push pull 100-400mm extensively?

For me, going to a rotating zoom would be a significant downside. The push pull offers a speed and control in zooming that no rotating zoom ever offered.

The 200-400 will in no way a "replacement" for the 100-400. What manufacturer replaces a light, easy-to-handle $1500 lens with a large, heavy $11,000 lens?

As Jake said, going from a push-pull zoom would be a downgrade for many of us, as many photographers who have used the push-pull design extensively prefer it to a screw type zoom.

Unfortunately, I do think that when Canon finally upgrades the 100-400, it will cost around $2800. This projection is based on the price increases of the lenses Canon has upgraded within the past 2 years - many of these are around 60% to 80% more than the version they replaced - and I see no reason why the 100-400 would be any different.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I had one for about 3-4 months, and I couldn't get used to the push-pull, no matter how I adjusted the tension ring, or whatever it's called... I am more used to the rotating zoom.
