Just started shooting with my 7d. I have a 5d mkii and love it. When i shoot with the 7d and i focus on a subject the whole screen comes up red. Is there anyway just to have the focus point light up like the 5d? I usually just use center point focus and so used to see just the middle box light up red and not everything else. I just got rid of the grid through the view finder, but is there a way to take the focus points away and when i focus just have that focus point come up?

Right after i posted this i found it in the custom functions. But now if i shoot landscape style i get the single box in the middle, but when i shoot portrait style it'll adjust and ill get like 3 boxes that will focus on something diff. Im on spot AF in the middle and ive tried evaluative and spot metering and does the same thing.

The 7D can switch to a completely different focus set up when you swap to portrait mode. There is a menu setting where you can fix it to stay the same. I never really figured out all the options the 7D had for the focus system before I traded it for a 5D but I do remember that being an option.

It even differentiates between which portrait orientation it's in (shutter button side up or down). Just flip it in each direction and change your focus mode/point to center and you'll be good to go. I don't know if it changes with the camera upside down though as I've never tried that. That just seems too awkward :D
