Hello, I recently upgraded from an XSI to a 60D (got what I thought was a good deal on it) and have decided to take some more pictures. Just looking for any advice on how to care for the camera to make it last as long as possible, possible warranty I should buy. Thanks!

Warranties are just a ripoff and money-maker for those selling them. Avoid them and just stick with the factory one. Electronics that fail tend to fail early.

I tend to wipe mine down with a damp micro cloth after every shoot. Get a rocket blower and learn how to blow off the sensor as well.

Agree with Gregg.Siam about the warranty, the one Canon provides is enough(usually). The best advice that I would give is to go out and shoot, don't worry about babying your camera. It is a tool, go out and use it!...Welcome to POTN by the way.

I was thinking the canon warranty was going to be enough, I have done a lot of tech items and usually never buy a warrant. Thanks for the advice!

You purchased a great camera, and it comes with a great warranty. As Gregg stated, the extra warranties are not needed. Anything that might fail usually fails quickly. Plus Canon is great with service, and many times will repair/replace things even after warranty. Keeping it clean is a great idea, but don't be afraid to use that puppy to it's fullest. Shoot, shoot and shoot some more. The cameras that produce the best images are the ones that are used often. Take a look at some of the older bodies. They are rubbed, nicked and worn, but they still produce amazing images!

And welcome to the forums!

I never buy warranties for anything - I've saved thousands over the years. If something were to go wrong I would just get it fixed, or use it as an excuse to 'upgrade' :-)

If you paid by credit card, it is possible you have warranty that extends beyond the Canon warranty. My platinum MC adds a year for instance which gave me 90 days + one year for a 60D refurb.

Better check the fine print on that warranty extention with the credit card John. Yours may be different but none of mine have ever covered "used items".

Too long ago now to matter but when I got my refurb 60D (summer 2010) the credit card peoiple said that a refurb from the original manufacturer was covered, but a refurb from a third party, like B&H or Adoroma would not have any extension available.

I once collected on a similar instance when I picked up a high-end Sieko "scratch & dent" watch at the factory store in Mahwah NJ. There was an insignificant scratch in the crystal which readily polished out with toothpaste. The watch started gaining about 2-3 minutes daily after about six months and the Mastercard extended warranty covered a replacement.

Some good Canon made tutorials at http://www.learn.usa.canon.com …s/eos_60d_tutorials.shtml (external link). Very worth while sitting down in front of your PC, camera in hand, and explore the topics.

Those are pretty good. I went through those when I got my T1i a few years back.

Glad that worked out for you. I haven't ever tried it on a factory refurb before, but good to know that it covers those.:) I've always gotten a "no-go" on extended warranties on used items whenever I've tried it.

Thanks everybody for the helpful tips. I got the 60D new so I'm fairly confident in its ability. I have a buddy that is helping me get into things. He has various lenses and is letting me try out what ever I want. Its very tempting to buy a lot of stuff!

Yeah...I've noticed since picking up my first body, my wallet has been rather light!

Yeah it doesn't help when the friend that got me into this is always on the couch next to me saying, "Yeah you should probably just buy that"
