I was looking at the Adobe webpage on CS and it's filled with a push for Cloud. Has anyone changed to using the Creative Cloud?

We signed on back in August. I get the student price. We looked at the price for all of the software that we'd use (Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, After Effects, Illustrator, Flash, In Design...) total vs. the cost of the cloud. For us the cloud was a good deal.

As far as use, the only thing that really makes it different from "purchased" software is that you have to sign in when you use it. It's still installed on your computer and all of your files are on your computer. You can also install it on as many computers (both Mac and PC) as you want, but you can only be signed in to one of them at a time.

I signed up for Creative Cloud three weeks ago. You get every single piece of software, including Photoshop, Premier, Illustrator, InDesign, Muse, Lightroom, and all the upgrades along the way.

Twenty bucks a month (I'm a teacher and they gave me the educational discount). That's a great deal.

Thank you. bw!

How does the sign in work exactly in practice? Is it accepting of offline use and only requires periodic server sync to use fully, or will I be crippled in usage if I can't connect to their servers that very minute I launch the app?

I was not able to start anything on my laptop when I didn't have wi-fi connection.

Ouch. Well, adobe's lost a sale. I have lightroom 4 on a win/mac license that I use on my win7 desktop workstation and macbook pro laptop, and I was going to buy a copy of PS elements, but stopped when I noticed I could only buy in win or mac. Confirmed with customer support that I could install the secondary copy of the win license on a windows laptop to use out of the office, I would have to uninstall it from the windows machine and convert to a mac license to install on my macbook pro.

Noticed the cloud single app license appeared to be win/mac, and was considering eating the monthly fee for the more powerful app, but doesn't make much sense if I can't actually use the software I'm paying for, does it? (The whole point of the laptop was to work on stuff while on the move away from home, where I don't have a guarantee of internet access.)

Always nice and comforting when companies assume I'm going to steal from them when I'm trying to give them money. Guess I'll make do with GIMP, as I don't want to buy two copies of Elements.

Everything seems to be shifting to the always connected model these days. The mobile hot spot on my phone sees a lot of action these days because of it.

I don't have to have a wi-fi connection. Nor have I ever had to sign in after the initial purchase.

The software phones home every thirty days to see if your subscription is active.

At least, that's what mine does. I use it offline all the time.

Interesting. I'm getting a lot of conflicting reports. I'm wondering if it possibly has something to do with a quiet check-in system that calls home if online, and can kick a user off. Such as if I install on my Desktop and laptop, but have them both on at the same time it could kick one off even if I'm the only user actually working on either system.

Also, is the phone home every thirty days, regardless of connection, or does it update every time you launch while online? Would really suck to make it all the way out to camp and then not be able to use the software I own.

I believe that I read that it was every 30 days. I'll try to find it again in the next couple of days.

Now, to be clear, I don't have to sign in if I'm launching a program I have installed, through Creative Cloud. But, let's say I now decide to install Dreamweaver, I will have to sign in when I launch the Adobe Application Manager, which is needed to install it. But, after that, when I launch Dreamweaver, no sign in is required.

And, I do use LR and PS offline. A lot. Never had an issue.

Do I need ongoing Internet access to use my Creative Suite applications?

Because your Creative Suite applications are installed directly on your computer, you will not need an ongoing Internet connection to use them on a daily basis. However, you will need to be online when you install and license your software, and at least once every 30 days thereafter. The software will alert you when you need to connect to the Internet for a license status check.

See the thing is, I hold a degree in computer sciences, work in software QA, and am very well aware that there is often a large difference between what a programmer/developer says something does, and what it actually does.

I don't know what to tell you, other than I use it offline all the time and have never been asked to sign in, other than with the application manager which is used to actually install the individual programs you select. Perhaps that is what Mavgirl is talking about, or maybe her 30 days were up. I've been using Creative Cloud for several months.

I just tried it again on my laptop. I signed in online then I restarted my laptop with no internet connection. Photoshop would not start when I was not connected. Maybe it's my wonky laptop.

I'm asked for my password often, but I also use it on multiple computers so that may come into play. But then, if it's not running a check how would it know that?
