With the 7D around, the 20D gets used only when I use the 7D with the 100-400.

This is what I am thinking - the 5D2 with the 24-105 or 50/1.4 and the 7D practically dedicated to the 100-400. And I can get rid of the 12-24 and 20D to fund the 5D2....

How does this sound? Will be my first FF...

Might be ok but your short on a really wide angle lens then. If you use the 12-24 a lot you will need to have it or replace it with a FF equivilant. Why not keep what you have a chance a 5dc, you already have video in the 7d if required, just a thought

I found that my 7d and 5d2 complemented each other very well.

I don't use the UWA very often and 12 on my 20D is the equivalent of 19 and instead, I will start with a 24.

Too early to tell if I will miss the 19-24mm range, but I will check my pics to see the typical wide angle range I use.

5D vs 5D2 - have not read up much on this topic. Given I have a 7D, will the 5D be a better bet than a 5D2?

A 5d2 has better hi iso performance and video. If these are not critical and 12mp is enough the 5dc is very capable. A 5d 2 is better though

The 5d classic is almost exactly the same as the 20d but with a FF sensor; the 5d2 is closer to the 7d but not exactly the same. The biggest thing for me was the LCD - the 5d classic's is impossible to see in daylight but the 5d2 is pretty good. My experience is that the 5d classic doesnt do anything better than the 5d2, although at half the price its hard to argue
