My farther in law is a keen watch mender and today he was working on a pocket watch from the early 1800s.
These Fusee chains that powered the watch where hand made by orphan children between the 1500s to the early twentieth century, this one is shown on a one pence piece to give a size scale.
I found his knowledge very interesting and I happened to have the camera with me so I snapped a quick shot before he put the watch back together, the amazing thing is it worked ...

maybe this would have turned out better, but I was just amazed that old watches actually had chains in them not to mention how they were made and by whom.
