How many of the 50L's beloved image qualities transfer to crop format? I assume that DOF is less razor-thin (by a hair?) on a crop, but is the difference enough to cause disappointment? Same question for bokeh, which is often referred to as "dreamy." I've looked at the images in the lens archive but they usually don't show the camera used. Exif would help, but I do 99% of my browsing on an iPad and I'm not sure how to view exif on that platform. Mostly though, I want to hear from actual users since, probably more than any other lens, it's so hard to judge from specs alone.

I'm thinking of buying a 50L this year because I love the look of the images I've seen with it, and I used to own a 55mm FD lens back in the film days, but I'm concerned that my expectations may be too high for crop use. FWIW, I also plan to buy a 5DIII next year.

On a related note, someone posted a thread a while back in which he accused Canon of bumping the ISO in-camera when shooting at f/1.2 to make it appear that more light was reaching the sensor than actually was. Is that true, or was that theory debunked? Seems like a pretty scathing accusation if true.

Check out the photo sample thread. There must be a ton of 50L + 7D images. If you can afford the 50L I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Not sure about your last statement. Seems a little far fetched. We are talking about pure physics here. Bigger aperture = more light. I am sure the in picture noise level would be terrible if that was the case.

I'm in Canada. Isn't that weird!

It will be great. 85 1.2 on ff vs 50 1.2 on crop. Beautiful color, great bokeh. 50L doesn't require much pp, amazing tones.

I had a 50L on a crop and loved it, good FoV for portraits, too tele to be a walk around lens though (much better on a FF in that regard). I too love the colours and bokeh of the 50L, though the 85L is superior in every way I think.

Check out the photo sample thread...

I've looked through the sample archive (many times!). Not surprisingly, the vast majority of photos in the archive were taken with ff cameras. Not as many crop examples.

Thanks for your input, and nice example.

Most people who buy a cropper do not drop $1300-1600 on a prime lens.
FF is used mostly on this lens, b/c of that reason.

85mm lens is the MOST popular FL for portrait which = 50mm lens on a crop.

So do not worry about this decision. It's a no brainer.
if you like 85mm and want to spend $1400 to get 1.2 brilliance, great color, contrast, and build - go for it!
And don't look back!

Currently b+h has this lens for $1369 new. usa copy.

good luck.

A joy to use on either format. Do check out the lens for focus shift issues. MIne seemed to shift a little at f1.6. I would use it happily at all other f stops.

The 21 cross sensor types on 5d3 is pure bliss to use. AV servo and you are set.

if you're getting it just for the shallow DOF, you should go for a FF camera and an 85mm f1.8...it'd give you less DOF than the 50mm at f1.2 on a 7D

So what would be a "good" portrait lens for a 7D then?

+1

Dropping $1500 for f1.2 on a crop is still no better than a ff + $350 consumer zoom.

Unless you are going ff soon, I'd just get the 50 1.4 and be happy with it. Then save the rest of the money to go ff.

50 1.4 isn't a bad suggestion at all.

The 50 1.8 isn't bad either, especially the Mark I version with metal lens mount.

The 35mm is for full frame ...the 30mm is crop only
