Two different lenses for sure -- what do you intend to use this lens for? I do love mine - Excellent IQ thoughout the range, 4 stop IS, fast focusing, compact -- SO -- do you need f2.8? Can you live without the extra reach? These are very key questions.

I have a 2.8 lens already (Canon 24-70) image quality is what I am after most. Will be used for portraits mostly. The extra reach will be nice too. however I like the constant apeture and lower light performance with the 70-200 though. But it is something I can live without, plust its a huge lens (size wise).

Had the 70-300L for a few months now and absolutely love it. Great IQ, IS, fast focusing but again all depends on your needs. The 70-300 at 200mm I believe max aperture is 4.5 versus the 2.8 on the 70-200 but you still gain the extra 100mm of reach. For me the 70-300 is worth the compromise to gain the extra reach...often shoot at 300mm, plus it should be substantially lighter and less expensive.

Love my 70-300L.

If you don't need f/2.8, it was worth the compromise for me to gain the extra reach as Derek said. I quite like using it for portraits actually due to the versatile range and the shallow compressed DOF you can get at around the 300mm mark. It's my go-to lens for wildlife or trips to the zoo. Sharp all across the range wide open, outstanding IS and wicked fast focusing make it my sports lens for equestrian and canine sporting events.

For low-light I would switch to a lens with a wider aperture, but for me 99% of what I shoot is in good light outdoors. If I'm moving inside I'll switch to one of my primes or just bring in the flash to the equation.
