7D remote trigger question

I just got a 7D last month and being that fireworks season is approaching, I had a question about remote triggers. I used a cabled remote switch with great success on my XTi. I saw a wireless trigger on B&H for less than the remote switch they had listed:

My question is, does this need an addtional part in order to work, like a receiver, or does the camera pick it up without having to buy anything else. The description doesn't indicate that anything else is required.

The camera shouldn't need anything. I have a 7D and I use my old Canon RC-1 remote trigger. Didn't need to buy anything for the camera.

speaking of remote....just got the RC-5 or 6. Bought one from ebay at fairly low price but its a canon.

My question is the range seem very limited......, also with 7D

Only seem to work if I am right in front of camera in a straight line. If I am out of sight of the sensor doesn't seem to work at all. This means I couldn't really use it in a group shot unless I save myself a seat right in the middle lol . Also doesn't work if I am behind the camera. Read somewhere that its suppose to.

Can anyone share his/her experience? I am just wondering if I got a bad copy of the remote

thanks

It's IR - it will work better in low light and won't work unless the there's a direct, or reflected, light path to the receptor on the front of the camera. But yeah, expect a max. range of around 15 ft.

If I use a IR Remote when standing behind the camera, I just hold the remote up near the front of the camera to trigger the shutter. Have you tried that?

I have the RC-6, it works fine with the limitations of an IR remote. I find that its a bit of a pain if I don't have the transmitter in front of the camera. I bought this http://www.bhphotovideo.com …eless_Remote_Shutter.html (external link)

and find that I like it a lot more. I can trigger the camera from inside my house with it out on the deck, approximately 15 ft. Bit more expensive but worth it to me. Will also work as a wired remote.

I have both types of wireless remotes and used them for different purposes. The IR remote is very handy for it simplicity, small size, and for the fact it is the ONLY remote that will start or stop video.

The regular radio wireless remotes are bit more cumbersome because you need two parts, but they have much better range which means you don't need to stand anywhere near the camera.

I'm generally standing right near the camera when I'm shooting fireworks so range isn't a issue. Can you use the RC-6 from right behind the camera (like 1 foot behind it) or do you need to be in front of it for it to hit the receiver?

I stand behind the camera and then just hold my hand out near the front.

I am thinking strongly about buying the Vello remote for my fireworks shoots and buying the RC-6 later if I need one for video.

The nice thing about the RC-6 is that I can also use it with my XTi if the description on B&H is accurate.
