Hey all,

I have an EF-S 17-55 up for sale and I just got messaged asking if I would be willing to trade for a 24L Version I.

Two parter question: Would this be a decent trade? And would the 24L Ver I be an upgrade over my sigma 30? The wider focal length would definitely be better for me but I haven't found much to complain about the sigma 30. There's always room for improvement though.

Thanks for your help guys! I haven't been able to find much info on V1 of the 24L so I figured some experienced users on here would be able to give me a good answer.

I have the 24 v1 but never used the Sigma 30 since I have FF. The 24L is a good lens but the corners are not as sharp and has a strong CA. But if you're using it on the 7D, then I think it'll be really good. The center sharpness is great and micro contrast is really nice as well.

I would be interested in comments about the original 24L as well. I use a 20D and an EF 35 f/2. I like it a lot and am considering several lenses in this price range (800-1000 $US; the 17-55 is another). I am interested in the 24L because I occasionally wish that my 35mm was wider.

This thread doesn't really talk about the two lenses I have listed for comparison here.

I've owned both, though not at the same time, and not really used the 24L on my 7D. If you're using it on a crop body, the focal length will be quite different(roughly 35 vs 50). The Sigma is sharper, vignettes less than the 24L wide open, and is also smaller.

I'd go for the Sigma if the focal length suits you.

I already own the sigma. I was offered the 24L V1 in trade for my 17-55 (which I am selling). I would only want the 24L if it was an upgrade to the sigma 30.

Just a thought.
I have owned both lenses and was happy with both.
The sigma does not work on FF. So that was why I sold mine.
It was a fine lens though.
Being a person who has bought and sold many lenses I find that L lenses are much more sellable for the reason they work on all canon bodies. and therefore hold their value.

Does anyone have any insight as to whether the 17-55 for the 24L would be a good trade? They seem to come up with comperable values on ebay etc.

Just do it since you already decided to get rid of the zoom. If you dont like the 24, just list it forsale :)

The 24 on a crop body is fantastic. Just go for it.

So you own a 24-105 as well?

I wouldn't do it. Use the money from the sale of 17-55 and upgrade your telephoto end....

I got the 24-105 to replace the 17-55. I'm loving the 24-105 and i use my sigma 30 for low light/indoors since i "downgraded" to f4.

My debate is whether it's worth the upgrade from the sigma 30 to 24l v1 since someone offered it as trade for My 17-55
