My 70-200mm f4L IS Non IS lens is having an issue. Worked fine last week but over the weekend I tried to use it and all my photos were completely blown out. I noticed that the aperture will only close down to about f5.6 and won't go any further. Already cleaned the contacts and tried two different camera bodies.

I know I will have to send it in to Canon to get fixed but I'm wondering if anyone knows what the price is on something like that? It's such a cheap lens that I'm not sure if after shipping and a couple hundred dollar repair bill if it's even worth fixing. I may just chuck it on Ebay as broken and buy a new one or the IS version.

Any other tricks I can try to get it working again?

Weegee said F8 and be there! You don't need all those extra stinkin' apertures!

If you decide to go new though, I'd get the 70-300L IS instead of the 70-200 f4 IS.

Well it won't even close down to f8

I rarely use this lens anyway as I mainly use my 400mm f5.6L or my 500mm f4L but I did find a few uses for it every now and then. Which is weird that it stopped working because it is hardly ever used.

I doubt I'd get the 70-300 as I already have a 300mm 400mm and 500mm prime and if I need 300mm I'd rather use my primes.

If all else fails, find a rubber mallet and give it a few raps :-P And if that fails,
go Gallagher on it with a 50 pounder :-P

I could always turn it into a coffee mug

Back on subject, nobody has a rough estimate of price to fix a faulty aperture? I know Canon usually charges around $250 for most repairs which is half the value of the lens.

I had a 300mm f/4 L IS repaired for stuck aperture a little over a year ago. Standard labor charge of $269 + $16 shipping. I would look at local camera shops to see if it might be cheaper. If you're ready to write it off, maybe you could take it apart and clean it.

I wouldn't spend $300 fixing a $500 lens that still works. If it still works at 4.0 or 5.6 just shoot at those apertures. It is a sharp lens wide open so there is no need to stop down.

Except for all the times I need a slow shutter in the day.. which is where it gets used most for panning aircraft.
