I just have one giant catalog for all my photos, and am wondering if I should continue to do that or not...

I don't do any pro photo work (yet) so no need for separation there. I was thinking about creating an "archive" catalog, but it seems like a bit much. The keywords, etc. etc. don't sync between the catalogs and I'm not actually sure if/how you move a photo from one catalog to the next.

Do I just keep going or is there a way to trim my catalog size to improve performance?

I don't believe that the number of images in a catalog has more than a minimal effect on performance. There are many posts from people with huge catalogs to back that up.

However, if you still want to do it -

Select the images you want moved to the new catalog. File | Export as Catalog
Remove images from the big catalog (well, you may want to open the new catalog to check it's worked first).

I use several catalogues so that I can keep family stuff and public separate and scans from pre-digital age. I find the best and quickest way to open required catalogue to double click on catalogue file in windows explorer. Advantage I find is you can be sure you looking at appropriate work and and prevents you suddenly clicking onto glamours shots when having a preview session of holiday/event with the family.....
