Florida's endemic bird & one of only fifteen endemic North American bird species.

The more popular banded variety

...and the seemingly rarer non-banded variety :)

I see that the first one has leg bands. Do they keep track of the birds to watch the population?

Yes, most Scrub Jays are marked with three bands, the silver metal band is from the US Fish & Game and has an ID # on it and the two plastic bands indicate where it was banded and when. There are eight sub populations of Scrub Jays (all in Central Florida), the largest of which is around 1000 birds, so there are probably in the order of 8000 of these birds in existence. Banding helps monitor the movement of birds within their subpopulations and any movement into other areas.

Absolutely beautiful hues of blue in your Scrubber Scott. Both captures are nothing short of perfection.
I will admit some confusion, however, because try as I might I can't find the Banded Scrub Jay anywhere in my bird guides - :)
