I went out to shoot birds last Sunday, but had no luck. But then as I was leaving the park, I heard a train whistle and went to investigate....

Holy Cow! 8 engines on this thing! Auto-racks don't weigh that much, so I am sure they were re positioning some power, but it was still quite a sight. Judging from the exhaust, it looks like only the first two were doing any pulling

If the traffic lights cooperated, I figured I could make it to the next siding in Hercules, about 9 miles away...Luckily I had green all the way

It was going slow enough through the siding, I went ahead into Franklin Canyon, just past a golf course, where I know this little private grade crossing. This was a grab out the window from an on ramp

I soon found out why the train was going so slow, as it was going to hold in the siding for a westbound UPS "Z" train

It didn't take long to clear the siding though, and soon, the auto train could be heard, than seen

Since I had all the time in the world, I decided to make a dash over to Martinez to try and catch it on the Muir Trestle, which is named for the John Muir house, a national landmark, just about 500 feet from this bridge. Luck was with me!

So a bust morning for birds, turned into a pretty cool train shooting opportunity. Just goes to show why I always bring a variety of gear when I head out for pictures. Thanks for looking!

4 and 7 could have been timed better.

its not how you take the picture, its the final result before editing.

Itsed65, was this around maybe 1:00 pm on Sunday? I saw it from Highway 80 while heading to Nut Tree in the San Pablo area, but not being familiar with the area, couldn't find a place to take any pictures. Tried Willow Road west, but just got lost in housing tracks! Gave up and went to the Western Railway Museum.

Nope, this was Saturday. Willow west would eventually get you to the UP on the shore, but you would have to go east toward Hwy 4 to get BNSF. Hope you saw some cool stuff at the museum!

You most likely saw this train, which was the Sunday Auto Train. I took this at 12:41 in Franklin Canyon on Sunday.

That was probably it, I could see it was a car train, but never saw the loco's that were pulling it. Nice set of pictures. Only had an hour at the museum before heading for a shoot at Nut Tree Airport. They have a nice collection, I'll have to go back when I have more time.

I bet people who seen that while at a crossing got upset at first! Usually judge how long the wait will be by the amount of power units. lol

Nice collection of shots!
