Just bought a EOS T3i, and the guy forgot to ship the cables. My question is will the usb cable from my powershot series cameras work with the T3i?

This is my first DSLR, so I hope you can understand my desire to use it and check the results, but I would not want to cause any damage from using a cable I shouldn't, if that be the case.

Thanks for the help, will be reading more in this section now. I am a novice, so will need all the help I can get now that I have entered the DSLR realm. If you have any tips, feel free to add them here, and thanks again! :)

Interesting question.... I think Canon uses the same USB cables in all their cameras, so you probably would be fine with the one from the Powershot... and damage is very unlikely. I've never had any problem across a number of different Canon models (including both some of the point n shoot models and various DSLRs). It might even be standardized enough that you could use USB cords from various manufacturers' cameras, but I wouldn't risk that unnecessarily.

However, it's just a better practice to download images by removing the memory card from the camera and putting it into a card reader. Many computers have built-in card readers that will accomodate the SD card used by your T3. This is much faster, more efficient and more secure, plusthere's less chance of problems from wearing out the USB socket in the camera over time (which does happen, though it's not terribly common). You also aren't running down the camera battery charge during downloads.

Compatible subject to one caveat; check the physical size of the small end. Two different connectors are used in the Powershot line, dependent on the age of the camera.

For downloading your images consider using a card reader instead of the cable. Its a simple device and is pretty much hassle free.

If it fits, it will work. USB is standardized across devices.

Yep, and as mentioned, there are two different mini/micro USB connectors.
I think odds are in your favor. If it doesn't fit, then one can be had from Newegg or amazon for under $5.00

And as has been mentioned, the tip of the day is to buy a USB card reader for downloading your images.

Thanks everyone for your time and answers! Much to my surprise, the gentleman I bought the camera from sent me the cables AND a card reader he included as a bonus, and they arrived in this morning's mail quite by surprise. The camera, lenses, bag, etc. are not here yet, but are scheduled to be delivered today by FedEX, so I am very close to being one happy camper! :D

Happy, happy, happy! :)
Here is what I bought, camera and basic lens had a few shots, other lenses have never been used, bag was brand new never used, and most of those batteries have never been used. He bought this whole setup for a trip that fell through, and decided it was all a bit too much, and I got the whole shebang for less than the camera body is listed for on Adorama today. I cannot wipe the grin off my face, LOL!

Glad to read everything worked out. The T3i is a nice camera and I'm sure you will get many good memories captured with it. :)

Some things to check, since the equipment has had little use; verify the firmware on the camera and if you intend to use the Canon supplied softyware, again check current versions and upgrade as needed.

Go to http://www.usa.canon.com …bel_t3i_18_55mm_is_ii_kit (external link) and explore drivers and software. Manuals are also there is needed.

The powershot cable should work as a back up. It's proper title is a. "USB A to Mini B" cable. My first three proper cameras with screens (one was an IXUS) used this lead and my Fuji HS 20 also uses the connection. I have a lead from my old & sold Jenoptik JD 2.1 bought 10 yrs ago. It fits and works both the Fuji and the EOS 600d. Btw, how come your manual has a Green cover and mine is purple? And what is the other booklet beneath it as I didn't get one with mine. What was the $ count for all that? Wondering if you got a better deal than I did.

Also, if you're loading into a PC that has an SD card access, it's many times simpler to just take the SD card out of the camera and put it into the PC. The SD card then shows in the PC directory and can be copied to any other location in the PC using normal copy/delete procedures. I always verify the copy before I delete from the SD card.

Also, the very next thing I do is copy from the PC to an external drive as an assurance that I won't lose the pics during editing.

Note: I'm an amateur and only shoot jpeg.
