Studio Flash recommendations

My wife would like to get into portraiture work, can anyone recommend a good initial book that will give her the basic knowledge through to intermmediate level.

The best beginner book, and maybe the only book you'll need, is the studio lighting book from Scott at http://www.lightingmag​ic.com . I've read a few books and that was easily the best, and the simplest. There's also a thread on choosing studio lighting if you need help with that.
