So I was asked to shoot a wedding for a friend of a family member. Nothing major, just a small ceremony and then photos of the wedding party, family, etc...
This is my first time doing a wedding, and to be honest, I'm not sure where to start. I've done mostly senior/family portraits, and even some engagement photos. They know this is my first time, and have a small budget, so they aren't being overly picky. They are mostly concerned with having their special day photographed by someone other than a family member with a point and shoot. I'm comfortable charging them a lower price since this will be my first time, but I'm wondering what might be reasonable? Do I included prints in the pricing or is that usually a separate issue? I've been combing thru the threads on here, but just figured it might be easier to start my own. Thanks for any info!

Usually, for most of the portraits I've done, I start with $200 for a 1-1.5 hour session, unlimited outfit changes, 1 location. I'm flexible on the price though. That usually covers my cost of the shoot, my time, and any PP. Although, I love doing all the PP work on the photos, so I don't consider it work lol.
With that they get a portrait gallery of 20-30 images. From there they can purchase prints and/or CDs.
I make most of my money from the sales afterwards, that's why I don't do 'packages' but sell more ala carte.

I just did my first wedding for $800. I thought it was a decent price and the B&G were very happy with it. I just loaded the images up on a hard drive, went over to their place and put them on their computer. Not the most professional approach but the guy was in IT so he took care of the rest.

I guess it just depends on how confident you are. We already have a couple more weddings booked (my mate jake is going to shoot with me) and will be looking to charge around $1400 for them. Thats just a starting price.

You have costs(gear, time, editing, etc) so you should charge for those.
In ideal world, you should say no.If your friend won't like the images, you will ruin your relationship.
Explain the situation. If they insist, shoot it, provide the images and separate and provide the costs for extras(if they want).
Don't include prints...next thing you'll have is a complaint " you charged me $1 for 5x7 print and I know a place where I can get it for .40cents. What kind of a friend are you to charge me so much... :)

I would charge them $1000 flat for 10 hours. No prints.

When dealing with friends or family AND you're offering a significant discount, keep it simple.
A flat rate for your time which includes your cost, and a DVD with high res JPEGs.

The good thing is its a friend, so if you do a great job, you know they'll brag about and refer you. The bad thing is, its a friend, so if you screw up, not only will you probably not get referrals, but as someone said, you could ruin your relationship with them.

Friend or not, create and have them sign a contract.
