Hard to think of 'turtles' as 'wildlife' :) Looking to know what kind of turtle is about to lay eggs at my barn (don't want my fingers 'snapped off' if she's a snapper).. Thought this was a little early to be 'out & about' but...that's Mother Nature for you :)

You're in Ontario? It does look like a big snapper I saw laying eggs in Muskoka. Keep fingers away!

Thanks Ian! I thought he might be a 'snapper'... Ducked his head in when I found him, so I asked if he minded me taking his picture & he popped right out, looked real friendly but I did keep my 'distance' :)

I'd say it's a shy turtle Cheryl, but not a snapper. Shell is all wrong for a snapping turtle.
The shell configuration says terrestrial like a Box Turtle not aquatic like a pond slider or snapper. Don't know Canadian Box Turtles though so I'll have to stop there :)

Not a Snapping turtle, the shell and the head is not consistant with Snapping. I believe it's a Blandings turtle which are common in Ontario.

After Steve's suggestion of Box turtle I googled it & it seems it is a 'Blandings' as TJays says. Known for their yellow throat. Thankyou all for your comments & suggestions, good to know what the species is.

Nice shot. We were taught when we were kids to hold a stick in front of them. If they latched on, leave it alone!
