Sweet. I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on one of those. Let us know how it goes.

Looks pretty cool... and a bit heavy.

What's the flight time?

Here is where it all begins:

http://www.dji-innovations.com/products/phantom/overview/ (external link)

Drone is designed around the go pro -- total payload is 1000 grams, so in theory it should handle a s100.

Reported flight time is 15 minutes. Best thing is that its gps enabled with a return feature. IF there is trouble, it comes back to automatically. Go Pro with iPad app should mean I can frame from the ipad.

1000 grams!

100D : 407 grams with battery and card.
50 1.8 : 130 grams.
Total 537. You could carry both and extra batteries for longer flight time!

Mount it upside down using the tripod socket, rotate in PP...

Just don't use it for commercial purposes...

They're not being used legally then.

UAV's for commercial use are verboten by the FAA without massive hoop jumping for the proper permits.

That's good to know Jay. I was wondering why the news agencies weren't using them during that search for the guy in Boston, this explains it.

Its interesting, because all I can find are committee reports that say UAS (unmanned aerieal systems) cannot be used for commercial purposes under RC Hobby rules. But I can't find what the rules are if you do. Its almost like they say:

Rules for driving your car at night are NOT the same as daytime.

Great, what are the night time rules?

We'll get back to you.

How do you trigger the camera though? May be one person operates the drone and you will do remote clicking and or videoing..
