Does anyone have the EF 20-105mm f/4L lens? Opinions?

I am thinking about purchasing it and would be using it with a canon 20d. I currently use the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L with it (I'm an architectural photographer) and it's the only lens I have right now with the exception of a couple of lenses from my 35mm EOS that need to be upgraded.

Interestingly enough I've always wondered if Canon was marketing this particular Lens more for the 1.6x crop vs the Full Frames. Some of those reviews at FM aren't very nice for the FF users.

I just went through the "great debate" about the 24-105 f/4 vs 24-70 f/2.8. The negative reviews about the 24-105 from full-frame users at the Fred Miranda site pushed me to the 24-70 f/2.8. The big brown truck should arrive Wenesday, in fact. Now, I'll just have to worry about getting a good copy!! I also have the 70-200L f/2.8 (non-IS) so I.ve effectively covered 20-200 with two excellent lenses. Now, IS is very nice, but there isn't any substitue for f/2.8 vs f/4. I am (mostly) a tripod/monopod user so IS (while very nice) is less of a concern for me. I also own the 28-135 IS for my Rebel 350 which produces VERY good results in the 70-135 range. Since I plan to buy a full-frame body in ther future (perhaps there will be a full-frame replacement for the 20d) I can leave the 28-135 on it and use the L glass with the (someday) new body. Canon has solved some early problems with the 24-135 but I still am a little leary after comments from the full-frame users. Just my $.02.

I have had this lens since December 05 and can only give it high marks. It is fast AF, yields bright images and a great range for the 20D. The IS works well. It is however pricey -- I believe I paid $1250 at B&H.

Good luck,

Dennis

I have been using it on my XT for a little while now and can only say it is flawless. No problems at all. IS is great, f/4 is fine. Like the other poster said, it may have been designed for a FF camera, but from reading the reviews I think the crop camera people are getting a better deal. That being said, I have also used it on my FF film camera with no noticeable problems either. It is not very wide on the XT, but after looking through my past photos most were well within rage of the 24-105. Now that I have it I reall know it is not a concern. Personally I have no problem switching to somelike like the 10-22 if I need more from that end. Again, all and all I give this lens an A+.

The price does suck. I really do not like putting out more then 1K on a lens, but I have no regrets. If you are looking for a better deal then the $1250 places like B&H have had, check out www.badgergraphic.com (external link) They have had it for $1095 for a while now. Shipping is fast and cheap, full US warrenty, easy exchange/returns, and the people are great to deal with. Just call them if you have question or need some help. Not a fancy web site like B&H, but by far one of the best online purchasing expierences I have ever had.

If you need more info, there have been about a billion threads on this lens all over the place. Seach around and you should find more then enough info. Here are a couple of links to get you started. Good luck~

Honestly, I don't really care the reviews. I use it on both the 5D and the 1DM2N and I am perfectly happy ! :)

I love my (3rd) copy of the EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM;)

I couldn't agree more! This a great lens that covers everything I need right now that my 100-400 IS L can't.

if you're going to use the lens for architecture work then it's not recommended as it's got more distortion than ..say, the 24-70

Yeah, it was. Sorry. Here is the correct one.

The 24-105 is under lenes, page 2, and you have to add it to the cart to see the lower price.

I will edit the post above as well. Thanks~

Our two 24-70 f2.8's are quite definitely alot better in terms of picture quality than my 24-105.

Having said that the 24-105 is OK , much lighter and smaller but suffers at 24mm with vignetting - I, for one, hadn't appreciated quite how noticeable is was going to be on FF.

This is on FF though - a 1DS II

FWIW the wife - who earns her living using the cameras - will not trust the 24-105 due to it's performance.... but then quality is everything and weight is less important. For me it seems a good walkabout lens but not really as good as other L lenses for a pro.

For about 6 weeks now I have the 24-105 and I love it. Good contrast, colours and good build. Not to havey and the IS does it for me.
For no reason at all I would change my 24-105 for a 24-70. I would consider a test only if the 24-70 2.8 one day has IS. I had a 24-70 and
for me the 24-105 gives me better results in all fields. Color, contrast, weight. The only thing the 24-105 don't have is 2.8 but who know
maybe someday Canon would make a 24-105 2.8 with IS. ... ;)

I have the 24-105 L. Just got it for Christmas. It replaced an EF-S 17-85mm. It is head and shoulders over the EFS lens. It is sharp as a tack and the colors and contrast are great. I have not done everything with this lens yet but I am very pleased with it so far. I did wince at the price though.
