Just like the title states. I'm considering selling my Canon 580EX II and picking up a couple YN-568's along with a set of YN-622c tranceivers. Thoughts?

I've heard that YN-568 are not as strong as even the 430ex2.

dont quote me on that but i read a large thread on flickr about it.

Unless they are less powerful then the yn565 they will be more powerful then the 430exII but less powerful then the 580ex II

The 568ex and 622c is a great combo for OCF but the 568ex is not a 580ex II. Don't get me wrong they are great flashes for the money. I have one and just picked up another, but yongnuo has had quality issues in the past (I had two bad 565ex's) so I know if I was getting paid for my work I would not risk it and I'd stick with 580's.

The 568ex is not wothout its issues already. It over exposes at 1/250 in HSS on some camera and gives a camera and flash shutting down error message is fired before its fully recharged on the 60d.

So do you mind the possible decrease in quality? (Mind you my 565ex has taken a 6 foot fall on to cement and is still alive so it's my a fall apart if you look at wrong type of flash)

Hold on a second... YN-565 does HSS? I thought HSS was the only advantage the 568 had over the 565... I might have misread. Maybe someone can clear up the differences between the 565 and the 568 for me? Thanks in advance.

YN-565EX has an external power port but NO HSS.
YN-568EX has HSS but NO external power port.
(there's a little [Unsubstantiated] rumour about concerning a YN-568EXII - maybe this will address all the complaints about no external power port. Dunno, it's still one of those "a friend of mine's uncle's workmate has a dog who heard it down the pub" things at the moment - and now I can't find the reference either, of course. Isn't it always the way? I did look for it!)

Personally, I'd keep the Canon 580EXII AND get the YN pieces - unless the secondhand market in BC is much more buoyant than it is in the UK. Here, you'd get next to nothing for it and it simply isn't worth the loss for the few £ - maybe it's different over your side?

580EX II's are going for $400 CDN right now. That's why I'm thinking about gettin' rid of it ASAP.

No it does not. That's was a mistype on my part. Sorry about the confusion.

I would keep the 580 EX II. Even if power was the same, the 580 is much higher in build quality and I believe it is weather sealed.

I know it is. But I already own a YN-560 and it hasn't failed me once. I realize it pales in comparison (in terms of build quality), but one 580EX II doesn't do me a whole lot of good and I don't plan on shelling out $500+ for another speedlite, ever. I'd rather buy another head for my elinchrom ranger. I constantly hear people raving about the YN-622c tranceivers and I like the portability of speedlites; just not the price tag, which is why I'm considering going this route. I could buy 3x YN-568's and 4x YN-622c transceivers for $665. Seems like a no-brainer to me! If one dies, buy another one. Big deal. I guess I'm really just hoping to hear from others who use the YN speedlites along with the YN-622c tranceivers.

What would you like to hear?

It's an amazing combo! Like I said its not without its faults but for me it is exactly what I want. Hell I just sold my yn560's and I'm in the process of trying to sell my manual triggers because I bought another 568ex and 622c (I already have one yn568ex and two 622c). I like the fact that I can do off camera ETTL or manual with them and I LOVE the fact that I can change setting right from the camera instead of having to go to each flash and change it.

If you're not married to your 580ex II and think you'll be happy with the 568ex/622c combo I say go for it!

I have the 568EX at about 0.2 stops less than the 580ex (about 0.2 more than the 430exII), but other reports seem to vary a little.

They work fine with the YN-622C, the head even zooms remotely with the flash layed out straight, which the Canon doesn't do.

The issues mentioned above have both been corrected, the 60D Error 20 as of the 1st of April.

It sounds like you already know the pros and cons, if you're aware of the situation then you know what to expect. Replacing dead gear is one thing, but the thing that bothers me more is things that work but give you troubles. Not to say the will happen definitely with the YN combination, but you have to expect it could happen. The YN-622C are so nicely engineered I do wish they made a higher build quality version you know you could rely on, at a higher price.

The Phottix Mitros flash at $299 is likely a better middle ground - http://www.adorama.com/PHMFCA.html (external link) but those and Odins are well above your budget (we don't really know about YN-622 compatibility yet).

One other thing to consider, if HSS is not such a priority, is that YN will surely have remote manual flashes fairly soon, if its not already built into the current YN-560 III -

http://flashhavoc.com …w-rf-602-3-radio-trigger/ (external link)

Just imagine sub $100 flashes with built in receivers and remote manual control (which is considerably more simple therefore reliable than the complex TTL triggers), and at that price you can afford to replace any duds.
