I took a series of images last week that all had dull gray skies behind the subject, so I altered the final image in Photoshop. Someone asked how I did that, so I produced a quick demo using one of the other images from the series. Click the link: http://www.screencast.com/t/OPuDv81kfE (external link)

Well done. Of course, there's that small nit where you say, "Looks like we have some cleanup..." ; )

For a subject with hard edges, or something like hair to contend with, there are some links in:

Yeah, well if I was planning on keeping that one, I would make sure to put clouds behind the bird so that cleanup was not required. If I had realized when I started the video, well... :)

Great Tut. Refine Edge and contract would have helped you a bit before the selection.

Agreed.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Oh good, I couldn't remember who asked. You can avoid that halo effect if you make sure there are some clouds right there behind the bird. That's way easier than editing the edges. :)

Halo around the bird is amenable to easy repair; Small size brush with low opacity, peripheral blur to erase a few pixels here and there at border.
What is the hard part, is that not all the ugly skys are nice and monotonous like here.

Nevertheless a very good tutorial and BTW has anyone told you that you have a Wonderful Voice Box?
With sound like that, I would like to see a lot more tutorials from you!

Thank you. :) Yes, you're right that in this particular case the sky was very helpful in being totally gray. But the technique still works pretty well in a lot of cases.

Good voice box? Yikes! :)

That is Photoshop CS6. For the time being, I'm a Creative Cloud subscriber.
