I have a significant birthday arriving (40) and the Chief Financial Controller may allow an equipment upgrade..ya me. Currently I have 400D with about 30,000 shots on it. It has been a good performer with no dramas except I have noticed the batteries don't hold their charge as well as they used to. I was thinking of an upgrade to the 7D. I figure with the MKII coming soon there will be some good deals around in July. I shoot all kinds of things from family, to landscapes to sports (motor racing and cycling). Do you think this is a wise upgrade and if not I am open to suggestions.

Cheers

I was in the same boat, however only having a 600D for 6 months and wanted a bigger body and more robust one.

I bought the 7D on Thursday of last week and it's getting delivered today. I've been without a camera for a week and I can't think of anything else.

I bit the bullet because the 7D is well established as the best crop body out there. It even went up against the D7100 recently and there wasn't a lot between them

The 7D mkii is going to come out at a really high price and it will likely have a few niggles. It's taken them several years to get the 7D to where it is now and the sensor is going to be better than your 400D and also up to 57 RAW in burst mode and endless jpg's it's going to be a hard pair of shoes to fill for a 7d mkii.

Get it now and be happy :)

Wouldn't want Red Snapper to be disappointed - it's only around 27 raw images before the buffer fills and the frame rate drops below 8 fps.

I came from using a nikon D40x. The 7d has so many bells and whistles and tweaks available it took me a long time to begin to harness its powers, but that's part of the fun. Constant learning. It's a great camera.

Got that from some guy doing a test on your tube. I think the official stance is 25 and 130 jpgs before it starts to slow. You tube vid could have been just lucky

There is no question the 7D is the best crop sensor body made. I don't care what brand you throw into the mix. It is a great value for what it is currently selling for, so no matter what the next great thing is, get it as soon as you can.:D

Just got the 7D through.

I'm gobsmacked at the build quality of this over my 600D. With the 600D you'd feel the shutter going and it would tend to move your hand ever so slightly, however with this, its not even an issue. I certainly feel I've not earned the right to use this camera yet regardless if I could afford it or not.

Testing times indeed :)

I would like a 7D, it would be a good match up to my 50D. But, I'm going to wait to see what the 7DII may bring to the table. Canon has been closed lip about when it release any more news about the 7DII. I'm thinking they don't want to have the same situation as what has happened with the original 7D. I'm going to wait until I get some more information, or when the final product is released before I buy a new body.

It would be a good upgrade as it matches your usage well.

You would also not need to sell your Sigma.

As they have been with every camera over the last decade or so.

And what 'situation' might that have been? I don't recall any 'situation'.

The 7D will be great for sports (due to focus system / speed), it won't really have any advantages over say a 60D for your other photography

This is very true.

Holding both the 60D and 7D in my hand on Saturday passing, without that 8fs and build quality and storage needs then there's nowt different.

I actually feel i'm not good enough to own a 7D as I find it similar to passing your driving test and 6 months later buying a Ferrari.

I disagree - the quality of your photos on 500px are excellent.

Although they don't seem to include any high speed shots that show off the advantage of the 7d though!

One nice difference is when practicing with the 7D you are less likely to have an expensive repair than with the Ferrari.
