I wonder what the significance of the spots are? I have seen a few of these at Thursley but dont recall seeing them with spots.

Thanks Linda. The spots made me think this was a Pirate Wolf Spider (Pirata piscatorius http://wiki.eu-arachnida.de …?title=Pirata_p​iscatorius) but it was pointed out the eye positions are all wrong.

I have photographed one nearly as spotty as this #C below although the normaly look like #A and #B

Lovely spiders, nice captures. Seeing you are in Hampshire, have you tried The Hawk Conservancy Trust where there appear to be meadows that should be good for bugs albeit you might have to keep to the paths?

I have been there a few times Toby, but only to photograph the birds. (I can well recommend it, particularly good flying displays and don't miss the woodland Owls bit at the end of the day).

You are probably right, they have a few unimproved meadows, but there is so much heath, hanger and other habitats around here I tend to look for bugs there. It is a question of getting the time, weather and energy to do so however.
