I have seen a used 70-200 f/4 L and an EF 1.4 extender Mk1 for sale at a reasonable cost. I want a decently competent medium telephoto zoom for general nature photography.

Can anyone give me an indication of this combination in terms of image quality. I know the 70-200 f/4 L is good, but is the extender also a worthwhile purchase for the extra reach to 280mm. I'm using a 5D classic, images of largish water birds, often against sky or water.

If it is any help to you I have a Kenko Pro300 DGX 1.4 teleconverter I use with my 70-200 f/4 IS. It gives good results that should be comparable to the Canon TC. This was taken with my 40D at 280mm

The TC tends to throw up an error code after a few shots when used with the 40D, but works every time on my 5DII. When it throws the code on the 40D I take it off, then put it back on again and it is right for another half a dozen shots. I have not bothered to try taping the pins. As you can see from the shot auto focus also works well, that was at f/6.3 and it focussed perfectly.

By the way, I see you are a new member, so welcome to the forum. I hope you get some good advice from it and join in the fun with us.

I have a 70-200 f4l & canon 1.4 tele mk11. They work very well together & you still get full AF. To get pin sharp though you will been a tripod/monopod.

Kind regards, Kevin

Nice one, and thanks for the reply's. My reason for asking was because I had disappointing results with a 2x kenco with a Canon (non L) 70-200 that I borrowed from a friend for an afternoon a while back. I know the L lens is a different ball game, and the one I have seen is very affordable, but theres the opportunity to buy the extender at the same time, and don't want to waste my money if people here think it not a good combination. I can't afford the 70-300L, even used unfortunately.

You do not want the 70-300 anyways. Get the EF 70-200/4 L IS lens. EF 1.4x TC will be fine.

Why wouldn't he want the 70-300L anyways? It has better image quality and focuses 50% faster at 280mm than 70-200 f/4 IS + 1.4x TC III. I had both and did ridiculously careful and comprehensive comparisons.

Anyway it sounds like he has the 70-200 f/4 non-IS. I bet a tamron 70-300vc delivers a little bit better image quality at 280mm than the f/4 + 1.4x TC and about the same focusing speed.

Do you all think the 1.4 is enough? I'm thinking of using it for animals/whales. I have never used one but I have been thinking of getting one. Which is the best brand to buy?
