Why can't I save a *.gif directly to *.jpg? I have to save it as another file format first.

Am I missing something, or are the two formats just that far apart?

I have CS5, btw.

If you have a GIF format image open in PS you should be able to do a save as JPEG. you might want to check that the image is open as an 8 bit RGB image. If it is in another format then you would need to change it. This should be under the Image tab of the menu bar.

Because a GIF may be saved as indexed color, in which case you should go to Image -> Mode -> select RGB color. Then you can save it as Jpeg.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.
