Very dark.

The eye is drawn to a screw head - not the most interesting subject.

Yeah, I just noticed that it's much darker on my IPS than non-IPS monitor (neither have been recently calibrated). I never really thought about the screw head.

Subject matter is lacking.

Yeah, I've had that complaint with my photos before.

I suppose I see a scene that looks interesting and take a picture of it, regardless of subject matter.

It's your artist eye. You see something there no one else sees. The challenge is to portray what you see to everyone else. Keep shooting.
