So I just started getting in to off camera flash photography. I picked up a 580ex2 and a cheap impact umbrella/stand kit to start learning. This is a portrait from the first shoot I did to test it out with my gf.. Edited with LR4.. Any critiques, advice and observations are welcomed!

Nice.

Backlighting working well here - window?

I think you could have used a warming filter on the flash.

the blue/green marks on her arm and below a bit distracting.

She is a beauty. I think the light on her left side is so harsh, and not sure about the flare on this one, seems not to add to the scene for me? With light toned down, this would be a fabulous portrait.

you're a great friend, but if Zombies chase us, I am tripping you.

I like it a lot!
The only thing nagging me is the blue stuff on her arm,
no biggie though easily fixable in post.

Thanks - no window here, its actually the flash positioned behind her with a umbrella (cam left) and white foam board (cam right) bouncing the flash.

I have some gels on order from bhphoto.. any ideas for DIYs with household items for now? I also did some split toning, I may have used a light blue hue for shadows, possibly a culprit..

The marks are paint, I pulled her from her hobby to participate in mine! :) Im trying to avoid cropping or photoshopping my photos if possible.

Thank you! I increased lumi values of orange/yellow and brought up some of the levels to help soften her skin, maybe too much?

The flare was unintended, I dont like the piece on her left brow, it bothers me. Any non destructive techniques I could use to remove it?

LR has a clone tool, it's not as great as the photoshop one, but totally usable.

Doh, I knew that! I used it to remove some blemishes on her face.. But this is a good write-up, I'll give it a shot when I get home tonight and try to get rid of that distraction Thanks!

On a side note - Anyone know whats with the bright teal highlight on top of the wood chair? Is that CA?? How can I get rid of that in LR?

You'll have to play with the flash settings to get it right, but...I found a DIY for Gels (of sorts)
With sandwich baggies, turn them inside out, use permanent markers (of the color you want) color one side of the baggie, flip it right side out and viola, DIY Gel with stuff at home.

I think I'd have to see a diagram - I see umbrella in eye reflection, so how can it be behind?

If all flash then gels not relevant you can adjust colour balance to suit. gel for matching different light sources. Of course you can be creative with them too.

Flash is behind her pointing towards an umbrella which on front of her to the right (cam left) and bounce board to her front left (cam right)

Or just send Lee an email and they'll ship you out a sample pack! they overnight-ed me one for free. Might just be in the US though.
