Hi Scott. Nice close-ups. I have the same set up as you and was wondering about a 1.4x tc rather than a 300mm which is out of my budget. You seem to get some good pics, any advice for using a 1.4x before I spend any cash in time for the new season?
BTW April weather hasn't been much different in the UK. In the South East we've had a couple of nice, warm days, but they don't last and we'll be back in the chill before long!
Misery loves company huh? I loved my 300 f/2.8, maybe in an unhealthy way
! With the new 70-200 MkII and older 1.4 though, I feel like the give up just isn't that big, if at all. I'd have no reservations in recommending this combo to anyone looking for some reach on the cheap. The key to making it effective is really just about being patient and letting that action come to me so as to avoid huge crops. Frankly, this is true with the 300 as well. If you really wanted reach, I think you need to get to 400 at least and then I'd say the 400 f/5.6 or 100-400 would be decent options for relatively little cash. If you want to throw a little more at it, the non-IS 300 f/2.8 with a 1.4x will get you close to 400 and could probably be found for something in the low $2k USD range.
