VERY cold and blustery, just what every shooter hopes for. No wait, is that snow on April 20th? SWEET!!!! Yeah, it was that kind of day. To make it worse, our boys played inconsistently but still managed to keep hopes of advancing alive at the end of the day. Here's a few shots, all with a Canon 1D3 and 70-200 f2.8 MkII with 1.4x tc. Exif intact. Still haven't gotten edits down on the new monitor as everything seems to really lack pop on this screen yet seems too contrasty on my home monitor...

Nice set Scott, #5 looks back-focused but colours look good here!

nice separation with the depth of field. For #1 and #3 the dreaded floating body parts show up as a result of what i presume is the crop.

If #5 is a crop my personal preference would have been to go a bit wider so not to cut the back player's face.

Very tight and crisp photos

Appreciate the feedback. I did have room on #5 that I cropped out. On 1 and 3, I either had to clone the snot out of them or crop loose which I think would detract from impact. I picked what (I thought) was the lesser of these three evils and cropped with the floater....glad you brought it up though since I'll keep it in mind as I work through my next batch.

Hi Scott. Nice close-ups. I have the same set up as you and was wondering about a 1.4x tc rather than a 300mm which is out of my budget. You seem to get some good pics, any advice for using a 1.4x before I spend any cash in time for the new season?

BTW April weather hasn't been much different in the UK. In the South East we've had a couple of nice, warm days, but they don't last and we'll be back in the chill before long!

Misery loves company huh? I loved my 300 f/2.8, maybe in an unhealthy way ! With the new 70-200 MkII and older 1.4 though, I feel like the give up just isn't that big, if at all. I'd have no reservations in recommending this combo to anyone looking for some reach on the cheap. The key to making it effective is really just about being patient and letting that action come to me so as to avoid huge crops. Frankly, this is true with the 300 as well. If you really wanted reach, I think you need to get to 400 at least and then I'd say the 400 f/5.6 or 100-400 would be decent options for relatively little cash. If you want to throw a little more at it, the non-IS 300 f/2.8 with a 1.4x will get you close to 400 and could probably be found for something in the low $2k USD range.

LOL, I hear you on that!

Not happy with my last soccer outing for a number of reasons, I'd be embarrassed to post those images next to these ones. :)

oh c;mon now, we all have those days! I'll keep an eye out in case you change your mind. Great news for all of us, there's always another game just around the corner, right?

Actually getting to do the one thing I love more than sports shooting tonight as I am off to the House of Blues to shoot some reggae. Even a "bad" outing shooting reggae is still a great time!
