"Churchill Grounds says that the measures were developed after consulting with several law enforcement authorities following the Boston Marathon bombings last week."

Law enforcement knows what is best for us.

The obvious question: are the forbidden cameras really a security risk, and why?

I would imagine they think a bomb could be put inside?

This sounds more like the Beyonce effect to me. They want to control their image so are banning any pro style camera, just like Beyonce is now banning any and all pro photogs. Like all politicians they've just found a convenient situation to capitalize on. As they say in politics, never let a good crisis go to waste. ;)

And you couldn't fit one anywhere else? lol

The people running our world/the people with power scare me... This is just one of many examples of failed logic.

Sad but true, IE all these proposed gun bans/blaming guns, the politicians are preying on the high emotions following sandy hook etc. "save the children" LOL. It happens all the time, and it works... Once we lose these rights its infinitely harder to gain them back!

Quick, they better think of more things to ban after the Boston bombing!

The policy about prohibited cameras:
CAMERAS WITH DETACHABLE LENSES
CAMERAS WITH LENSES MORE THAN SIX INCHES IN LENGTH

The response from a representative of Churchill Downs after my request to change the policy and allow DSLR cameras:
"...the policy on camcorders and large cameras is recommended and endorsed by our law enforcement partners, and similar to policies in place for the Super Bowl and other major sports events in America. We rely on the experience, expertise and advise of more than 40 federal, state and local law enforcement and public safety agencies in establishing these policies, then we work to make Derby and Oaks days as seamless and enjoyable as possible. The action on cameras -- which are not banned, only larger cameras with the large lenses -- was among those recommendations and our partners have endorsed the overall list. I know that doesn't help your concern much...."

Copied from the Super Bowl website: "Small cameras and binoculars will be allowed. No spectator cameras with lenses over six inches (6") long will be permitted. Again, camcorders will be prohibited."

Copied from the Daytona 500 website: "Binoculars, scanners, headsets, cameras, not in a bag, worn separately over the neck or on the belt and seat cushions carried separately are also allowed."

People at Churchill Downs are clueless! I am getting madder by the day!

Exactly, an explosive could be placed in pretty much anything. There's an agenda behind this and it isn't protecting the public.

Oh? You better hope not.

So you're willing to just roll over on something like this because it's not your problem (yet?)

This is also another huge problem with our society, people don't change until the issue/policy is DIRECTLY affecting them. Super annoying... Kind of like a stubborn smoker, until they get lung cancer they keep puffin' along...
