IIRC, in the early 70's (mind you I was younger then 13), I think either Muammar Gaddafi or Idi Amin didn't allow photographers for fear that the camera could be rigged to be a gun or an explosive device. That made sense to me, as they were/are hated 3rd world dictators. I wonder if this is along the same lines.

However, seeing how the Boston brothers were indentified through the aid of amatuer photographers, I'm surprised Churchill Downs is going this route. If something were to happen, wouldn't it be helpful to have a larger pool of better images to go through? Not that non-interchangeable lens cameras can't produce good images, I think the number of cameras brought to the event will be reduced.

I seem to recall that many more people have been killed by devices triggered by cell phones than SLR cameras, but I may just be a lunatic in the eyes of the rule makers.

I say it again, it won't happen in cycling, period. First, races are held on public roads or on public properties. There are no arenas or stadiums. You can't police people in what to do in an event like this. My analogy would be like watching a parade. Can you ban people from taking photos with their DSLR in a parade? No. Second, people's livelihoods aren't at stake here. If it is, you won't be shooting photos of the horse race by the stand. You would be on the track instead. I am never a big fan of shooting photos by the stand and hoping to produce great shots. So what you can't play with your DSLR while watching your football games or horse races. Finally, I don't invest my mental energy on issues that are really not worth fighting for. Now, if you want to talk about guns and the NRA and the background check and whether or not NRA is supplying guns to the bad guys as well, go right ahead. I will give you a head start. Don't tell me I didn't warn you......

In my opinion, the more cameras, the better. Likely 3/4s of people there would have cameras. Some will be shooting the whole time and capturing the whole event, some will be taking photos more sparingly. Together though, they would unknowingly be surveilling the whole event in a way that would compete with high end casinos. All they have to do is put a clause on the ticket saying that in the event of an emergency, any photos taken can be used for investigations. Instead, they would rather hide behind the safety BS and just ban cameras that they think would be able to take professional pictures and cut into their profits.

I hope your take on this is not the same as your take on bike races, with each small encroachment the gov't gets a little bolder, one day they will "come for yours" what ever that may be. We should all stand up for freedom, whether or not it effects us at this moment

If you seriously believe that public access can't be controlled on public property, then you haven't been paying attention to what has been going on. Start reading up on "Free Speech Zones" and report back. Its not as easy to control the public in large open space, but it certainly can be done.

I am from NY. Even if I can own a gun legally, I don't believe my little semi automatic hand gun can hold out the swat team with armored vehicles, drones, and helicopters.

Yeah but at what costs? My little bike race events could barely have enough money to put on the races. Let alone having enough resources to control all public access points.

Non detachable lens cameras with longer than 6 inch lens are also in the Banned list.
Now I wonder what kind of measuring device security has to accurately measure that lens, without making the line to get clogged.
Then when measuring 6 inch, is it form outer lens to outer camera body or to the end of camera body?
I think instructions are a bit hard to follow and gush if the lens is 5.9 but the guy reads it repeatedly longer than 6. Is there any referee, judge or supervising guard?

Think back to that Nascar race were a wheel flew into the stands and someone caught it on camera. It was all over YouTube and there was nothing Nascar could do about it (even though they tried). These people are trying to do the same thing, it's all about controlling their image.

It's obviously an attempt at controlling their event's image. They let in a select few groups; AP, SI, etc., and then those organizations only use photos that bolster the image of the event and if they don't, I'm sure the track threatens them with not being able to document the event next year. None of these groups can even let that be an option, so they play along.

Can't Churchill Grounds just ban pressure cookers?
