Hi I would like to know whether it is worth to take extended warranty for camera equipments like DSLR , lens or flash from Best Buy . Be it any Full Frame or Crop Camera and EF Lens or L series Lens etc.. Do we really get it cleaned and taken care like new? What you guys think?
Thanks

No. Please, dear God, no. I used to work at Best Buy and I can tell you that on no uncertain terms is it ever advisable to buy the extended warranty. If your camera is going to fail because of a defect, the odds are near 100% it will happen during your manufacturer's warranty. All other types of failure aren't covered by either the manufacturer's warranty or the extended warranty.

Only if it is not simply an extra piece of paper.
In other words, depending on who is behind it, Yes it may well worth the trouble or simply be a part of problem.

Yes, it's completely worth it. The people who are selling those extended warranties are running a charity and like giving money away. I also have some ocean front property in New Mexico to sell you.

Supposing we have some issues with the lens or the camera like dust issue or the zoom is not working then what's next? is this issue common? Ofcourse I will be using the lens and the camera. Mostly I was careful with any things that I handle.

Yes if you are talking about the Adorama 1yr VIP extended warranty with only $7.95 and it also protects all items you bought from Adorama on the same yr. Just think about how many lens you have and how much cost you to insure them.

But the OP is talking about Best Buy.

No to extended warranty. Most problems appear within the first year anyway.

When the early Ixus cameras first came out, I started down the road of Canon ownership and use. Since 2005 I've purchased several Canon bodies for myself and my son, and quite a few lenses. Sometimes I even take what some regard as an unreasonable risk, and buy grey imports. I have not ever had one single Canon product that has needed warranty repair. So extended warranties don't interest me too much...

Buy with a Platinum Visa card, and Visa Warranty Manager provides you double the mfg. warranty free of charge; plus the option to purchase an additional 5 years for a fee.

I've used it in the past, & it saved me $300 on a 100-400L repair.

When I bought my 30D from Best Buy, I bought the extended warranty and my shutter mechanism failed and had to be replaced after the manufacturer's warranty had expired. I was glad I had the extended warranty.

Yeah, and someone wins the lotto twice a week. Doesn't mean it's a good idea to play the lotto.

I sum it up.
No to Best Buy!

My worst buys comes from Best Buy. That is till some 6-7 years back and since then I have never gone to their shop.
And some of my worst costumer service experience come from time waisted to deal with imbeciles working there.
If BB, Definitely No NO.

I will like to chime in, since I recently had my 7D combo sent in for the annual cleaning and check up via the BB extended warranty (it was included).

Basically, I would never do it again. The whole experience was terrible: when I got the camera and lens back the first thing I noticed was that the first inner lens element was extremely dirty, and when looked at with the help of a flashlight it showed horrible scratches (like if someone took a tissue paper, dumped it on beach sand, and then proceeded to make circular motions on the lens). So, I took it right away to the store and asked to talk to the manager. I explained that my lens was not like that when I sent it in, and was told that it was the first time they had trouble with the service center. More on that later.

Long story short, the manager tried to get me another 28-135 but they did not have them, so he offered to give me credit for the value of the lens towards the purchase of another lens that they had. I saw a 24-105 on the display box and asked for that one, but again they did not carried them any more; so I asked about the one that they had there. After all the discounts, I ended up with an almost brand new 24-105 for under $400. Not bad. But that is not the end of the story.

For insurance purposes I photographed all my equipment and their serial No. So it dawn on me that perhaps those idiots at the repair center changed my lens. I went to the store, looked at the serial number and it was not my lens. Someone changed the lens either hoping that no one will notice or by mistake. I told the manager, and he said that he will take it from there.

The thing is that before I sent the camera, I asked where they normally send them for service , and was told Precision Camera in Tx. I Google it and it was mostly positive reviews. But when I got my camera back, the shipping label said Ct. Go figure.

Now, regarding the camera itself: somehow they managed to get the sensor dirtier than it was when I sent it in, and the most upsetting part is that they left the focusing screen full of fibers that are driving my OCD crazy.

The sensor eventually got better after repeated cleaning cycles. But the screen looks like my 2yr old took a Q-tip and ran it across the screen. I am very reluctant to even send it again for that.

On the paperwork that I got back, it did say that the camera was cleaned, lubricated and calibrated. They did clean the outside very well, but I am no so sure about the rest......Oh.. and they managed to delete all my custom settings....

So in conclusion: I would not recommend BB extended warranties for DSLR. I had wonderful experiences with them in the past with my laptops.

Also, they include a battery in the service plan, but when you call the number provided, they send you an off brand battery that is rated way lower than the canon ones, when I complained they said to send it back, buy an OEM and send them the receipt to get reimbursed. I am in the middle of that process right now.
