Picked this up at a thrift store along with some really impressive 135mm 2.8's. I had to buy a T-mount adapter as well, but I am impressed.

The lens is a Five Star 500mm f/8

I have some shots of items around the house, but I hand held and had to crank up the ISO... Maybe tomorrow I'll get out the tripod and do a real test.

This is ISO 5000 hand held 1/800th at f/8

100% - Pretty sure it would do better on tripod and focused with live view.

Not bad, and f/8 isn't that slow either. I thought these things were more like f/11 :)

These lenses do not have quality control and do come with a variety of quality or lack of it. You seem to have got a good copy with nice rez.
Stick to it and you will have a lot of pleasurable memories to capture. One thing I love about them is that light weight.

That 500mm f/8 "Preset" lens is actually made by Samyang in Korea and has also been sold under many other names. (Opteka, Bower, Kalimar, Phoenix, Rokinon, Quantaray, Vivitar, Bell & Howell, Falcon, Walimex, etc)

Here is a photo showing the threads where the T-Mount screws on. The lens is open at the back and will accept Canon EF 1.4x or 2x extenders.

Thanks, everyone... and thanks, Mike for that mini-review.

It looks like my "Five Star" lens is another Samyang version. I'm actually glad since I think Samyang has made some decent glass. I have their 14mm f/2.8 which is a great lens.

I will post some more shots this evening. I might do a 135mm comparison too under another post.

I have the same lens, but with the 'REXATAR' name. It out performs my 500mm mirror, but my eyes have trouble focusing it, and with live view, when I touch the lens, the image shakes so bad I can't see it. It's a fun lens, and I've been able to use it with my old 2x TC (1600mm equivalent on my crop). Cheap too, mine was in a box of lenses for $15 (6 lenses).

Got the monopod out... looks like f/11 is the sweet spot. No NR or sharpening.

ISO 4000 - 1/400 - f/11

100%

f/16 100% ISO bumped

Shows some fringing at f/8 and is a little soft - 100%

Looks like a few can be had on ebay. I found it's nice to have extension tubes handy as it has a pretty poor minimum focus distance.

You'll also need a T-mount adapter. This is the one I got.

The shipping is almost double the price on that first one. If it was local, I would pick one up!
