I think people can understand close environment locations such as concerts/stadiums that kind of thing.

An outdoor sport with a lot of space for people is harder to justify.

The grandstands are probably just as packed as the seats in the indoor arena. The infield is a different matter, of course...

before Boston, I had noticed things becoming more relaxed here...there used to be a limitation on the size of the lens brought in to giants games, that has been drop...and as far as i remember there's been no limitation on the size of lenses brought into niner games at candlestick either.

Not here. I had a sideline pass for a bears game shooting somethng for a client and they limited the gear I could bring in the stadium. Seriously, and I had a sideline pass.

Yeah sorry I should have clarified that. I'd be annoyed too in a packed grandstand.

This is not funny guys. What other organization will ban interchangeable lens cameras??

HS Graduations
College sporting events
Pro sporting events
etc
etc
etc

All because of a bombing in Boston. I did miss the news report stating that these type of cameras played a part of the Boston bombing???

Yes it was a tragedy BUT loosing our 1st Amendment rights is more of a tragedy. The camera industry will be hurt, less sales of entry level SLR's because of all these bans(future) then Canon, Nikon, Sony could see there revenue/profit fall and then less "new upgrades" available because of lost revenue.

This is a snowflake that could end up as a major snowball

Some of you will tell me I'm crazy, stupid, etc. BUT this is a beginning.

I agree here . . .

It is because they don't want the horses to be photoshopped to look like Beyonce.

They already do.

It is not about the camera. It is about getting people in and not having hours long wait to search bags. People bringing in a lot gear take a lot of time and probably annoy the people around them that have to try to look around their camera/lens. They are probably going to search everything extra carefully and eliminating a time consuming search probably helps a lot.

Glad I have a press pass to the Derby :D.

I can't believe this - I was looking forward to going to my first Derby and shoot lots of pics - freaking incredible. Yea, interchangeable lenses - now there's real security threat all right.

I have a feeling that more and more venues are moving to this and again I think they are using this as an excuse and its more monetary than security.

I had a sideline pass for Bears game and I needed it but couldn't bring in my 200 2L. Only the big media photographers and there were only a few, not like the old days, on the sidelines that were allowed the big glass. .

Was your sideline pass a pre-game pass?

Ya know I don't remember. But it was for the sidelines during the game and the only guys that had the big glass were the major media outlet photographers and it was only about 6 of them. They were very strict.

That is really strange. I've shot NFL for years and never seen that.

Some teams will have a separate pass that is a restriction for photographers that are supposed to shoot more sideline stuff, not game action.
