I did a wedding last year in a candle lit church with virtually black windows (plus it was dark outside) and to get a nice wide shot of the whole thing I was shooting at something like 16mm, 1/30sec, f2.8, ISO25600. The image was noisy, but it cleaned up okay from the 5d3 - I wouldn't put it on an A2 print though as I say! The only reason focal length will affect your results is the corresponding shutter speed you require... for example shooting at 24mm then you could get away with a shutter speed of about 1/30 if people aren't moving about too quickly - especially with IS. But 1/30 at 105mm means you could well have a blurry picture - depends how good the IS is and how steady your hand is. 1/30 doesn't guarantee to freeze the motion either, but it gives you 1.5 stops of light over 1/100, for example. Again it depends what type of shots you were getting, and how much room you had to work with, but in a situation like that, I would probably use my 50mm f1.4 and shoot at about f2, which gives you 2 stops of light over f4 - hence for 1/100 I would have been at ISO1600 instead of 6400. Obviously f2 isn't always practical, especially if you're shooting groups, so flash would have been the answer in this situation - especially if you could have bounced it off the ceiling. That’s really helpful, thanks Chris. Its funny, most of that I did actually already know but on the day I forgot the basics and went on to do my own thing. Im definitely using flash in future like you say!! Matt Boisclair, Reading, England

I have a 50mm 1.8- apart from it being plastic and a bit noisey (as in sound, not picture quality) is it worth an upgrade to the 1.4. For the £200 extra, will I be getting my moneys worth by upgrading? Im still not convinced the 24-105 is for me at the moment either but Ill have to stick with it for now. Well i've just done exactly that... (gone from the 1.8 to the 1.4 for an additional £200). Was it worth it? More yes than no... Chris Marriott Photography

Sep 23, 2013 10:50 | #3861 matttoofif wrote in post #16317724 So I did my first wedding reception at the weekend having recently upgraded from a 450d to a 5D mkiii. The outside shots were fine but indoors, using the 24-105 lens I shot in Av priority and found that the ISO I needed to shoot at around 1/100 was 6400. I thought this would be fine with the 5D but getting the pictures home and zooming in, they are pretty noisey and not particularly sharp. I know I can clear a lot of the noise up in Lightroom but I am a little bit disappointed at how soft some of them are. Is this simply because I’m limited with the speed of my lens or are there any techniques I can use to improve the quality in future? Guess what others have responded has been helpful. On most occasions, I find the noise at 6400 to be ok from the 5D3. But then there are times I am disappointed as well. I have now learned to always do some test shots and check the histogram!! ____O
