I'm thinking about ordering a Really Right Stuff ballhead and an L-Plate for my 6D. I'm just curious, how does the L-Plate slide out for portrait orientation? I see it slides out a bit to make room for shutter release cables and whatnot, but how do you do it? Do you have to loosen the bolt on the bottom every time? How solid is it, does anyone have issues with it slowly slipping downwards when sitting on the tripod?

You simply release the clamp, rotate the camera 90 degrees to the upward part of the L, then re-clamp.

Watch this video at about the 1:40 mark.

If you look at this product page for the L-Plate for the 6D, it slides out for portrait orientation.

This is the type of question that should really be addressed with RRS directly. They have live online chat support, email, and phone.

I would assume that it does need to be loosened.

Probably... was hoping someone on here had one and knew how it worked.

You'd get a much quicker and more accurate response from RRS.

The example you refer to appears to be using a USB cable.

All of my releases use a 90* plug, which the RRS bracket clears just fine. I've not had to reposition the bracket.

It looks to me like you'd have to loosen the clamp bolt to reposition anytime you'd want to shoot tethered with a USB cable in portrait.

Ahhhh, I see now. Thanks very much, Unbalanced!

No worries.

Go with the RRS gear.

You won't be disappointed.

Yeah, I see what you are talking about now. I believe they allow the plate to slide so you do not need a spacer to connect a cable release. Judging from the bottom shot photograph, it appears that you must loosen the connecting bolts in order to allow the plate to slide. However, if you are concerned, I would call our RRS directly and ask them about it.
