I'm thinking about shooting myself.... ??? Wait, that didn't come out right, lemme start over.

I'm thinking about making a self-portrait, with my camera as a prop. Apart from the technical issue of how do to it (resolved in a number of threads, I know because I've used the search feature...), I realized that a photographer making a self-portrait featuring his camera might just be a cliché. (And I'm not talking about the bathroom mirror/camera phone/duckface trifecta.)

Thoughts, opinions? How about an hommage to Man Ray? (As soon as I can figure out a solarization effect in PP)

Take a picture that looks like you were holding a different camera, an old Land camera or something.

Not in my eyes. Baseball players want pics with bats, car hobbyists want pics with cars, graduates want pictures with mortarboards. Cliche is when you do something that everyone else has done. But why are you worried about being cliche? Be your own person and photograph what you want.

Nothing worse than a photographer taking a shot of themselves in the mirror with the camera up to their eye and a moody, arty, intense and/or pouty face.

I always feel embarrassed for them....at least try something a bit different!

My opinion of course

...I did 200 days of self-portraits in a row. I don't think its cliche at all. My favourites from my project are here:

Just looking at it again: I had an awful lot of fun doing that...I had great days and I had horrible days: but never a cliche day. Shoot for yourself, don't worry about what other people think of what you do.

the reason its so popular is because many photogs only have one body to shoot with, so how else do you get a shot of yourself holding the camera?

Personally, I find other people to be much more interesting subjects than myself. I already know pretty much everything there is to know about me (and that might be a bad thing). However, if I lived in Ottawa, it might be a good january project :-)

I agree with Qveon. I'd always prefer to see self portraits that are a bit more 'unique' though, but, if you are using the images for social media for example, that's a really fast way of bringing your business/hobby across as well to people visiting your page. Nothing bad about that ;).

I get the idea about "cliche" photo's, people shooting the photo looking at a mirror. Hence is why I did something else.
