I have my photos spread across multiple hard drives, both internal in my Mac tower, that I want to give away to a friend, and on multiple different types of external drives.

The older USB 2.0 hard drives are no problem.

I bought a firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter so I can use my firewire 800 drives.

But what about my firewire 400 drives?

And what about all the pics on the internal drives (2) in the tower that I want to move?

What is the best and easiest and most time efficient solution?

I was considering buying a Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 G drive with 6tb of space and perhaps that may hold all my stuff.

Also, is Thunderbolt faster or slower than USB 3.0?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Mark

You probably can daisy-chain the FW 400 drives with the FW800 drives (but then all will run on FW400 speed).
Thunderbolt is faster then USB3, but I don't know if you will notice much difference, since both will probably be limited by the HDD: http://www.zdnet.com …erbolt-review-7000010229/ (external link)

Thank you. I did notice some of my fw 800 drives also have 400 inputs. I'll try that.

If you run your FW400 devices at the end of the chain, I believe that the other devices will remain at an 800mbps rate.

I think this is right, but not sure.

Either way, if your thunderbolt to FW800 adapter has more than one FW800 port, you can just get a FW800 to FW400 cable and run the 400s separately if you need to.

As far as your existing internal drive, you could network that computer to your new system or put that drive in an external enclosure to copy data off or access it.

You don't have the mess of ports I get to deal with on my new workstation, but I don't have to use adapters or worry about whether something will work! I have USB3, USB2, FW800, FW400, eSATA and 68 pin LVD SCSI.

It only has one connector but I will get another one if plan A doesn't work. Thank you again.

Again, thanks all.

While I've never been an adherent to the "don't put all your eggs in one basket" theory, as I do use 32gb cards in camera, and would use 64 I had some, I'm hemming and hawing about getting an 8tb thunderbolt drive and copying most if not all of my "old" 400 fw hard drives over to it and just putting them away. It's kind of a mess to have 10 external drives of varying ages, etc.

For cheap money get usb3 enclosures for existing drives and don't look back at FW.....as Apple sure is not focus on FW.

Personally I Ike LaCie 2Big drives running as RAID 1. My backup is a time capsule.
