And I direct that toward those who refuse to lock for sale threads, wasting members' time searching in threads only to find the item has been sold. The member has no problem posting that it's been sold, or following their thread when people reply.

I propose the mods (hey, they gotta earn the perks of Pekka's villa and yacht) pm those offenders (when the mods see it or it's reported to them) and give them fair warning to lock it or else.

Wit me or a-gen me?

100% for it. I hate how lazy some members are in the "for sale" section. Another pet peeve is "pictures coming" that never do. I guess that's another gripe though.

As someone who only recently figured out what the "lock" symbol means, imagine how many posts I was looking at. I finally started limiting my search to only the last month and it cuts down a lot of false positives. What I would like to see is a way to exclude "locked" threads from search results; if it exists I haven't seen it.

I don't think that there is any workable way of forcing someone to lock their threads that wouldn't involve an incredible amount of work for someone else, and the only way to justify that might be to turn the classifieds into a pay-as-you-go forum, and no one would go for that.

I like that it shows locked threads because I like to know how much an item was listed for! And I just did a search to see the going (used) prices of a certain lens and I saw you posted in there almost 2 weeks ago MDJAK, the person still hadn't locked it though

I agree with the sentiment MDJAK, but I think when we have free classifieds we have to deal with what we get. So I do not think it is reasonable to ask mods to deal with this issue.

I'm sure you must waste 10s of seconds a day clicking on locked threads.

Honestly, I thought this was going to be about threads where people ask simple questions that could be found with google in 30 seconds.

I'd prefer to lock all threads asking whether or not to use a strap, grip, UV filter or a lens hood. :D

Another idea would be having to list the buyer or no further postings allowed. It would curtail the number of scammers who sell the same item to multiple buyers.

I'll admit it's kinda weird having the power to lock the thread, on the other 30 forums I'm at, none let you.

On one they advice you PM a mod to close it for you, I of course close all of mine.
I kinda like having a little bit of power :D

I understand the OP's argument. It's not the actual clicking that is a time-waster; it's looking through ads then wanting to see more detail, reading all about the item then reading further down that it has been sold. No reason to get your hopes up on an item you've been waiting for then have them crushed as you find out it's been sold at the bottom of the thread.

I would acutally like it if there was a way for people to reply to "For Sale" posts - long after the transaction has been made.

I think it'd be cool if someone bought, say, a lens such as a 300mm f4 IS in March of 2010. Then, about a year later, in April of 2011, someone could go to that thread and say, "Hey (username of buyer), how do you like that lens? Gotten a lot of good shots with it over the past year?"

Or, "Hey, (username of seller), do you ever miss that lens?"

In that way, each "For Sale" thread could be kept open, and conversations could be ongoing for, well, ages. I would love that! But instead, all we have is a bunch of closed, locked threads that nobody can reply to anymore. Makes me want to bang my head against the wall.

And no, I wouldn't want to PM either the buyers or sellers to ask them such questions - I like ongoing communication about something to be right there in the original thread where all can see.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Not sure why you don't like the pm route. I pm past buyers of sellers all the time to see how the sale actually went down. Most are happy to reply.

Because then I am only seeing the transactions I have personally been involved with.

If some dude I don't know sells a lens to another dude I don't know, and they communicate about the lens for years afterwards, I want to be able to see all of that chatting back-and-forth. If they just PM each other, how am I, and all the other POTN members who are interested, going to see all that?
